Historical Summary:
Junaluska is the original tender to the motoryacht Olympus , and both were completed in 1929 by New York Yacht, Launch & Engine Company for owner George Heck. His new yacht was named "Junaluska" after a lake in North Carolina where he had property. When the yacht was conscripted by the military in World War II, the owner at the time kept the little tender for his use in California. She remained separated from the mother ship for 60 years! In 2001, John and Diane VanDerbeek found her again in southern California. She was a complete basket case by then, but still had the New York Yacht label plate attached and 5 of her 6 hull numbers could still be read, which matched Olympus. (In those days they would carve the hull numbers of the mother ship into the tender vessel as well.) The VanDerbeeks brought the launch to Alan Thomle of Stanwood, Washington, an expert at restoring runabouts, who spared no effort in putting her back into top shape, complete with a newly rebuilt 4-cylinder 1930 Lycoming flat head inboard engine similar to the original engine. When complete, the VanDerbeeks christened her "Junaluska" in honor of the original name of the Olympus. Separated from her Mother ship for 60 years, Junaluska was placed back in her chocks and continues her service as a first class yacht tender!

An iconic Feadship,
Olympus combines remarkable capability
with sophisticated ocean-living
Showcasing the successful Feadship / Winch collaboration and their carte blanche approach, Olympus combines artistic flair with engineering excellence fine-tuned by De Voogt naval architects, the studio behind more than half of Feadship’s global fleet. Custom-made furniture by Silverlining, original Modernist artwork, and light, distinctive soft fabrics decorate her welcoming and remarkably spacious interior.
Project Claire (hull 775) was Andrew Winch’s second collaboration with Feadship, one of an elite group of truly custom superyacht builders. Every project starts with a blank page and the finished yacht is entirely individual, unlike any other yacht in the world.
Built at the now Royal Van Lent shipyard, Project Claire changed hands during construction and Andrew Winch was brought in to direct the project and realize the young owner’s yachting vision. On completion, the beautiful motor yacht Claire was sent to the Far East and renamed.
“Since her delivery in 1996, she has subsequently been sold, but the elegant interior has not been changed” - explains Winch – “At least 10 years after we delivered her, our decoration studio was asked to re-supply all the original materials for a redecoration by her owner, who was intent on leaving the design exactly as we had originally conceived it.”
Olympus’ sumptuous custom interior has unique charm
Large and luxurious enough for formal entertaining yet inviting and private enough to feel relaxed for a couple, Olympus’ versatile layout works for every occasion.
In the 1990s, Feadship started to adopt more futuristic designs. The shift is evident in Olympus’ clean exterior lines created by Andrew Winch with Frits De Voogt. Her balanced proportions, including the ever-graceful Feadship bow, continue to appeal. Her modern design, enhanced by a striking palette of light “Olympus” blue and white with a touch of burgundy red, skillfully translates technical features into design elements. The final seal of approval came in 1997 when Olympus won the International Superyacht Society Award for the Best Motor Yacht over 43m.

Olympus is a compendium of celebrated names - Andrew Winch, Frits De Voogt, Silverlining, Ascher, Steal, Derain, Matisse, Feadship itself - and built to a standard that is almost unattainable today. Take a quick look around and see close-up what makes Olympus one of the most chic, appealing and capable Feadships on the market.
For a 55m yacht, OLYMPUS is extremely capable. Her well-planned and expertly engineered sundeck is designed to function both as a guest entertainment area and a technical platform. Very few yachts in the same class have a similar multipurpose configuration.
There are yachts and there are Feadships.
Find out why.
Knowledge, skill, workmanship, and attention to the thousands of visible and hidden details make a Feadship a Feadship.
The interior is ‘people’ rather than ‘design’ centric. The ‘wow factor’ lies in her comfort and livability.
Skillfully designed, the versatile deck spaces work on every level. For entertainment, dining, relaxation and water sports.

Vintage Motor Classic set to rev up crowds Feb. 6
After taking a year off due to Covid, the long-running Vintage Motor Classic is cruising back into the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront.
Held in partnership with the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and adjacent to its downtown clubhouse, the 19 th running of the Vintage Motor Classic (VMC) returns to South Straub Park Sunday, Feb. 6. The event features a myriad of classic vehicles dating from the turn of the 20 th century until 1980, and new for this year is a display of exotic supercars.
Andy Evans, co-chair and field director for VMC, said the event grew exponentially in the 20 years since it began as a handful of cars parked along Central Avenue. The VMC now averages over 150 vehicles over 25 different categories.
“We cover everything from early vintage cars – we’ve had cars come from the late 1800s,” said Evans. “Right up to the 1979, 1980 era as well.”
Evans said the cars are categorized by age groups, with a large contingent representing the automotive golden age from the 1920s through the ’60s. Organizers further separate vehicles by their place of origin, and Evans said Britain is always well-represented. Evans said classic American muscle cars are perhaps the most popular, and the VMC created a special group for Corvettes, Mustangs and Thunderbirds due to the number of those vehicles that annually attend.
“Certainly, the 1950s era cars are the big hit, so classic Chevys – a lot of them are ordinary cars, and people rebuild them,” said Evans. “We have a 1927 Model A; we have cars as old as that regularly turn up to the show.”
Evans said the VMC draws anywhere from 150 to 300 vintage vehicles. Following a hiatus, and with Covid still looming in the background, Evans expects to showcase about 120 classic cars this year. Evans called this year’s new category “modern classics” and said luxury dealers and sponsors are bringing selections of their finest exotic cars for crowds to admire.
He expects 20 to 25 Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins and Porsches in the Straub Park grass this year. Evans believes this year’s VMC will also set a new record for its most expensive car.
“If the guy who says he is going to turn up turns up, he has a one-off special car which is estimated at auction to be worth $14 million,” said Evans.
Evans said the VMC is not a concourse event, and judges do not “crawl over” the cars inspecting every little detail. Instead, attendees vote on their favorites, and he said value is not always an indicator of what cars win the people’s choice award.
Evans said the free event drew 6,000 people to the downtown waterfront in 2020, and that was before the new Pier opened. With nearby Pier and other activities drawing people to downtown, Evans expects at least 3,000 people to attend this year.
Evans said most of the cars that register for the VMC are driven there by their owners. They are not “trailer queens,” as he refers to the vehicles whose preferred mode of transportation is on the back of a truck. Most come from the Tampa Bay area, and he said a large contingent make the trip from Venice and Sarasota.
“Most of the cars are driven here, and they drive whatever distance, rain or shine,” said Evans. “These are people that are dedicated to the pastime, the hobby, restoring, rebuilding and enjoy running classic cars.”
The show has always supported local charities, he said, and this year the VMC is raising money for The Kind Mouse and The Louise Graham Foundation. People can donate when registering cars online, and there are fundraising activities throughout the event.
Registration for the event is open until Feb. 4. Those interested can register here .
