Draft:  Buyers could choose between a standard deep draft of 1.95 meters (6'5") and a shallow draft version, which was approximately 1.50 meters (4'11").

Interior Layouts: There were several interior layout options, including two-cabin and three-cabin versions. The two-cabin layout featured a larger aft cabin and more spacious storage, while the three-cabin layout provided additional sleeping quarters, making it suitable for larger crews or families.

Later versions of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 sailboat were produced, each with distinct differences:

  • Sun Odyssey 40 DS (Deck Saloon): Introduced in 2000, this version featured a raised deck saloon for increased interior light and headroom, and an elevated seating area in the main saloon for better visibility. It had a slightly different displacement and draft compared to the original model.
  • Sun Odyssey 40.3: Introduced in 2004, this version included updated interior layouts and design improvements, such as a more modern aesthetic and enhanced comfort features. The hull design remained the same, but the interior saw significant updates to meet contemporary standards.

Published Design Ratios The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Sail Area/Displacement Ratio: 16.5 Ballast/Displacement Ratio: 32% Displacement/Length Ratio: 185 Comfort Ratio: 23 Capsize Screening Formula: 2.1

The following analysis of the design ratios gives an indication of the boat's likely sailing characteristics, but see the 'Notes of Caution' below:

  • Sail Area to Displacement Ratio (SA/D): This ratio indicates reasonably good performance. Boats with an SA/D between 16 and 20 are considered to have a good balance of power-to-weight, suggesting that the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 should perform competently under sail, offering satisfactory speed and power in a variety of wind conditions but not being overpowering.
  • Ballast to Displacement Ratio (B/D): While a ratio of 40 or more is considered indicative of a stiff boat, a B/D ratio of 32% suggests that the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 will have adequate, but not extraordinary, stability. It will likely handle well in common coastal cruising conditions but may not be as stiff or resistant to heeling as boats with a higher B/D ratio.
  • Displacement to Length Ratio (D/L): This falls into the "Light Displacement" category (100-200). Light displacement boats require less sail area to reach their design hull speeds and are generally faster and more responsive. The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 should feel lively and react well to wind changes, making it a fun and sporty boat to sail.
  • Comfort Ratio: A Comfort Ratio of 23 places the boat in the category of a somewhat lively motion, typical of a coastal cruiser with moderate stability. The boat should provide a ride that is not overly harsh but may exhibit more movement than heavier, bluewater cruising boats. Suitable for coastal and near-shore cruising, but might be less comfortable in heavy seas for prolonged periods.
  • Capsize Screening Formula (CSF): A CSF of less than 2.0 indicates good bluewater capability. With a CSF of around 0.96, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 is well-suited for ocean passages, suggesting it has a low vulnerability to capsizing in rough seas.
  • The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 offers good performance and speed potential with a reasonably balanced power-to-weight ratio.
  • It has moderate stability, suitable for coastal cruising and casual sailing, though not as stiff as some ocean-going designs.
  • The boat's light displacement means it will be responsive and easy to handle, contributing to an enjoyable sailing experience, but perhaps a bit more "lively" in motion.
  • Its Comfort Ratio suggests it will be relatively comfortable for coastal cruising, though it may not be the best choice for extended bluewater passages.

Overall, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 is a versatile cruiser that balances performance and comfort, making it a solid choice for coastal and some offshore sailing adventures.

Here's how to calculate the KPIs yourself -  without having to wrestle with the mathematics...

Design Ratios: Notes of Caution...

  • The Sail Area/Displacement Ratio (SA/D): This ratio provides an estimate of the sail power relative to the boat's weight, which can indicate potential speed in various wind conditions.  But i t doesn't account for the efficiency of the sail plan, the rigging, or the skill of the crew. Real-world performance can vary significantly based on these factors.
  • The Ballast/Displacement Ratio (B/D): This ratio gives an idea of the boat's stability and stiffness, which is crucial for handling and safety.  But  it doesn't consider the distribution of the ballast or the hull shape, both of which can greatly affect stability. A high B/D ratio alone doesn't guarantee a stable boat if the ballast is poorly distributed.
  • The Displacement/Length Ratio (D/L): This ratio helps predict the boat's speed potential and its behaviour in different sea conditions.  But  it doesn't account for the hull design or the boat's overall weight distribution. Two boats with the same D/L ratio can perform very differently if their hull shapes are different.
  • The Comfort Ratio (CR): This ratio estimates the boat's motion comfort in a seaway, which is important for long passages.  But  it doesn't consider the boat's interior layout, which can also affect comfort. Additionally, personal tolerance to motion varies, so a boat that is comfortable for one person might not be for another.
  • The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF): This formula assesses the likelihood of a boat capsizing in heavy seas, which is critical for offshore safety.  But  it doesn't take into account the boat's handling characteristics or the skill of the crew. A boat with a low CSF can still capsize if poorly handled in severe conditions.

General Limitations

  • Static Nature: These ratios are static measurements and don't account for dynamic factors like wave action, wind gusts, or crew actions.
  • Simplification: They simplify complex interactions into single numbers, which can be misleading. Real-world performance is influenced by a multitude of factors that these ratios can't fully capture.
  • Context: The context in which the boat is used (e.g., coastal cruising vs. offshore racing) can greatly affect how these ratios should be interpreted.

In summary, while these ratios provide valuable insights into the theoretical performance characteristics of a sailboat, they should be used as part of a broader assessment that includes practical experience, sea trials, and expert advice.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 Sailboat Review

  • By Tim Murphy
  • Updated: January 15, 2011

jeanneau 40 sailboat

Last fall in a gentle southeasterly, I and two other Cruising World Boat of the Year judges sailed hull number four of the new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 model on Chesapeake Bay. Considering that she replaces the 39i, of which well over 1,000 were built, I felt that we were witnessing the beginning of something big.

The 409 puts a host of innovative details on a relatively conventional platform—with just one exception. While the hull’s basic dimensions are consistent with a typical modern cruising boat, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 has a hard chine running from about amidships aft. Having gone many years without seeing a single crease in the hull of a new composite boat, we were surprised in this year’s new-boat fleet to find three, all from Groupe Beneteau. Compared with that of the Beneteau First 30 and the Beneteau Sense 50, the hard chine of the 409 occurs higher in the topsides, where it will confer more interior volume in the aft cabin and extra form stability under sail.

jeanneau 40 sailboat

Immediately noticeable under sail is the refined thinking that Philippe Briand and the Jeanneau Sailboats Design Team have invested in the deck layout. It wasn’t very long ago that BOTY judges were lamenting the way that work stations were scattered all across the cockpits of new boats, from the coamings to the cabintops, making it difficult to sail shorthanded. No more. On the 409, as well as on many other of this year’s fleet, we were happy to see sailhandling lines and winches laid out within easy reach of the helm.

“The exciting thing here is the winches,” said BOTY judge Beth Leonard. Indeed, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 was said to be the first boat in the U.S. market to sport Harken’s new Rewind Radial Electric Winches. In one setting, you can use the two buttons in a high-speed/low-power mode or a slow-speed/high power mode—so far, just like any other electric winch. But by flipping a switch on the winch drum, you can do what no production-boat electric winch has let you do before: ease a line under load, safely and easily, without stripping it from the self-tailer. Harken’s new radial drum design promises to prevent overrides as well.

This boat had a single winch installed at each of the two helm stations, port and starboard. We would’ve liked to have had a third winch dedicated solely to the mainsheet. The boat we sailed was laid out with a double-ended mainsheet, each end of which runs aft through a stopper to the winch near the helm station. Because it shares the winch with the genoa sheet, which is always made fast to leeward, we were compelled on every tack or jibe to move the mainsheet to the windward winch. Especially when you’re jibing, you don’t want to rely on a closed sheet stopper while you clear the leeward winch for the genoa sheet. It’s a small quibble in an otherwise lovely working layout.

Overall, the large cockpit will happily accommodate half a dozen sailors under sail, and the cockpit won’t be engulfed in sailhandling spaghetti. “You could see a lot of people hanging around in the cockpit, playing back and forth, and having a good time,” said Beth. A removable helm seat opens the transom to the swim platform at anchor, with wet stowage below the cockpit sole for a life raft or diving gear, depending on how you use the boat.

“I was pleased with the performance of the boat,” said BOTY judge Ed Sherman, having sailed at 6.1 knots into 10 knots of true wind. A 40-horse Yanmar provided plenty of power to push the 409 along at 7.5 knots. In terms of noise under power, the boat was smack-dab in the middle of the fleet: 88 decibels at 2,600 rpm; 91 decibels at 3,000 rpm.

An optional performance package adds upgraded standing and running rigging, as well as tracks and cars on the side decks to accommodate a 140-percent triradial genoa made of laminated Mylar. Another option is a self-tacking jib, with a curved lateral track set forward of the mast.

Like other Jeanneaus, the interior of the 409 is a model of flexibility. The boat we sailed featured two cabins and one head, but a three-cabin layout is also available. That flexibility should appeal to private owners with or without kids, or to charterers.

Hull construction on this Jeanneau is no different from its elder siblings: solid hand-laid fiberglass. The cored decks are resin-injected—a process that involves two molds and produces two finished sides, inside and out. It’s more capital-intensive than hand layup, but it saves dozens of labor hours. The cast-iron keel comes in a 6-foot-10-inch standard version or a 5-foot-1-inch shoal version.

Until recently, all Jeanneaus were built in France. Although the particular 409 we sailed was French-built, this and other models are slated to be produced at the company’s production facility in Marion, South Carolina.

jeanneau 40 sailboat

In a creditable nod to the times we’re living in, the 409 is the first Jeanneau that offers solar panels—two panels of 45 watts each—as a factory-installed option. That, plus efficient LED lighting throughout the entire boat and a low-draw Frigoboat refrigeration system with a three-stage compressor, demonstrates Jeanneau’s commitment to renewable energy systems.

“I give them credit,” said Ed. “They’re thinking about power consumption.”

After a thorough inspection, it was clear to all of us that they were thinking about a lot of things.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Boat Test: 2024 Jeanneau NC 895 Sport Series 2

  • By Randy Vance
  • August 26, 2024

Pocket cruisers are designed to be the “transformers” of the waterway, and Jeanneau expertly engineered its NC 895 Sport Series 2 to be Optimus Prime. It is unlikely there is a more carefully planned deck and berth space on any vessel in the new 895’s size class. That is immediately clear from the starboard boarding door to the cockpit. That spacious area is made more so by opening the three-panel sliding door to the salon, joining those areas with fresh sea air. All the salon side windows open as well, and as do two sliding-sunroof panes. And if the sea breeze isn’t cool enough, shut all the glass and run the air conditioner. It’s reversible to create heat on a frosty morning as well.

Jeanneau NC 895 cruising

Interior and Accessories

In the cockpit, the aft lounge slides forward on rails to offer easy passage from the starboard side of the transom platform to the portside transom boarding door. Remove the couch cushions and rigid seatback to reveal that boarding option. Underway, the lounge slides aft to expand the cockpit. In the aft position, a lounge folds from the port gunwale to join the aft lounge, transforming the area into a conversation pit. It’s completed by an opposing cushioned bench seat against the slider, and the entire area converts to a sun pad by lowering a cocktail table, padded with cushions to match the seats.

Steps to the port and starboard catwalks to the bow are always accessible, and the starboard walkway is accessible from the helm for easy mooring. The narrower port catwalk leads to a triple lounge on the foredeck with an added cushion for seating or for kneeling to address the windlass. The starboard catwalk is wider, and the helm-station door opens to it, giving the singlehanded skipper snappy access to a midship cleat for making fast to the dock.

Jeanneau NC 895 salon

If instead of going forward you aim for the salon, Optimus Prime is evident in the dinette with a folding cocktail table that can be lowered to lounge level to complete a third berth. Or leave the table in dinette position but fold the forward half back to the aft half, like closing a book, and the forward lounge seatback folds aft, transforming that to a companion seat for the skipper. Even the skipper’s techie seat swivels to face the salon, should the boat be at anchor.

Jeanneau NC 895 cockpit seating

The galley also transforms from a compact sink and stove thanks to a removable panel that serves to extend the food-prep counter slightly into the cockpit through the sliding door. It’s welcome added space and connects in securely.

The three-panel sliding door separating the salon from the cockpit opens wide from starboard to port, making cockpit and salon one large gathering area. It’s optimal deck space with prime seating all around.

Pretty fair competition for the NC 895 Sport Series 2 comes from Cutwater’s 288C ($339,937 base price). Comparable in length, beam and preferred power, the Cutwater offers a somewhat similar deck plan, with a convertible dinette in the salon and convertible aft lounge that folds away like a card trick to open the cockpit or give access to the transom platform. The Cutwater’s salon and forward berth offer comfortable accommodations, but instead of an aft stateroom berth, there’s a double berth tucked beneath the dinette on the salon deck. It’s ideal for kids or teens—perhaps a little cozier than Jeanneau’s more-spacious midberth below deck.

Jeanneau NC 895 cabin

Both are best powered with a pair of Yamaha 250s with electric steering. The Helm Master EX joystick full maneuverability is an essential option, I think, and I would insist on the bow thruster too. With those tools, anyone can grease a boat in the tightest marina fearlessly. On plane, the power steering makes the vessel respond like a sportboat, and both vessels are comparable in displacement and will achieve speeds in the mid-40s with a light load.

When equipped with full maneuverability and Yamaha’s integrated autopilot through a Garmin GPS display, the autopilot can be addressed through the joystick, the GPS or a dedicated autopilot panel (a feature I’d omit as redundant). At 35 mph, the 895 boasts 150 miles of range using a safe 90 percent of its 158-gallon fuel capacity. Gentle canal cruising at 5 mph will take you almost 300 miles. A 2-foot-3-inch motor-up draft means getting into the skinniest marinas or past numerous shoaled-in miles of the Great Loop.

Jeanneau NC 895 head

When cruising the Great Loop, there’s a spacious cabin below deck with a forward V-berth and a surprisingly spacious midship berth. Separated by doors, they provide comfortable privacy. The companionway to them is via three wide steps for easy footing; on the way down, you’ll pass the circuit panel. A galley includes a microwave, sink and fridge, plus ample storage for cruising supplies. Lockers under the V-berth and a hanging locker provide space to store clothing, but the bulk of the storage on board is found, not surprisingly, under a cockpit hatch, where a large compartment can hold supplies securely, keeping them dry and ready for use.

With near-robotic autopilot controls, a vessel full of versatile transforming accommodations both topside and below, the Jeanneau NC 895 Sport Series 2 is the Optimus Prime in its class for cruisers.

Lynch Yacht Sinking Off Sicily Proves as Baffling as It Is Tragic

As bodies were recovered, the authorities and experts wondered how a $40 million, stable and secure vessel could have sunk so quickly.

  • Share full article

A diver in an orange jumpsuit suit and crews in gray shirts and red trousers hoist remains in a blue body bag onto a boat, as others in reflector uniforms stand nearby.

By Emma Bubola and Michael J. de la Merced

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Michael J. de la Merced from London.

Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire.

On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon.

But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4.

Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said.

In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter.

It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes.

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England.

Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain.

The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing.

So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified.

Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie.

Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters.

On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence.

The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment.

Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.”

Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing.

But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

By Veronica Penney

The New York Times attempted to reach the captain, James Cutfield, who had survived, for comment through social media, his brother and the management company of the yacht (which did not hire the crew), but did not make contact.

So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night.

Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them.

The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic.

After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked.

What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name.

He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader.

He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London.

He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team.

Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison.

During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial.

After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.

Royal Navy seizes cocaine worth £40m from Caribbean smugglers

HMS Trent confiscated half a tonne of the Class A drug from a speed boat south of the Dominican Republic earlier this month, taking its annual total of seizures to more than £550m.

A British warship has seized cocaine with a street value of more than £40m from drug traffickers in the Caribbean, the Royal Navy has said.

HMS Trent confiscated half a tonne, or 506kg, of the Class A narcotic after it intercepted a speed boat suspected to be smuggling cocaine around 120 nautical miles (138 miles/222km) south of the Dominican Republic earlier this month.

The vessel has taken close to seven tonnes of drugs worth £551m from traffickers in six busts this year.

Royal Marines and US Coast Guard boarded the smugglers' boat, supported by a US Maritime Patrol Aircraft flying overhead.

The smugglers threw their cargo overboard, but all contraband was seized and three smugglers were handed over to US authorities for prosecution, along with the drugs.

HMS Trent's Commanding Officer, Commander Tim Langford, said: "This successful operation with our American partners demonstrates HMS Trent's ability to support trafficking operations in the Caribbean Sea."

"Every member of my team can be proud of another significant haul - the sixth this year."

At least 13 people have died after a boat carrying migrants sunk off Yemen's coast, UN says

The U.N. migration agency says a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Yemen, leaving more than two dozen people dead or missing

CAIRO — A boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Yemen, leaving more than two dozen people dead or missing, the U.N. migration agency said Sunday, the latest in a string of shipwrecks that have left scores dead.

Despite a nearly decade-long civil war , Yemen — which borders Saudi Arabia to the north and Oman to the northeast — remains a major route for migrants from East Africa trying to reach wealthy Gulf countries for work.

The vessel was carrying 25 Ethiopian migrants and the boat captain and his assistant, both Yemeni, when it capsized Tuesday off the province of Taiz, the International Organization for Migration said in a statement. The bodies of 11 men and two women were recovered along the shore of Bab el-Mandeb Strait that links the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, while the 14 others — including the two Yemenis — remain missing.

The migrants departed from Djibouti, IOM said.

“This latest tragedy is a stark reminder of the perils faced by migrants on this route,” said Matt Huber, IOM’s acting chief in Yemen. “Every life lost in these dangerous waters is one too many, and it is imperative that we do not normalize these devastating losses.”

According to the agency, the number of migrants arriving in Yemen has tripled in recent years, from about 27,000 in 2021 to more than 97,200 last year, the IOM said, and about 380,000 migrants are currently in the conflict-ridden country.

To reach Yemen, migrants are taken by smugglers on often dangerous, overcrowded boats across the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden. Over the past decade, at least 2,082 migrants disappeared along the route, including 693 who drowned, the IOM said.

In June, at least 49 migrants were killed in a shipwreck off Yemen’s southern coast that also left 140 missing, according to the IOM. Another 62 migrants died in two separate shipwrecks off the coast of Djibouti in April as they tried to reach Yemen.
