What a quaint and beautiful club. The grounds are gorgeous and kept beautifully manicured and clean. The club house is cute and welcoming; the pool is perfect for a dip or to swim laps. The staff and members are friendly and hospitable. We were there for Texas Youth Race Week and just loved this club!

Texas Corinthian Yacht Club to Host U.S. Adult Sailing Championship This Weekend

KEMAH, TX. (October 20, 2021) —From Hawaii to Rhode Island, some of the country’s best adult sailors will head to Texas for a weekend of competition and camaraderie at the 2021 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship. The event is sailed in Sonars, and practice will start on Wednesday, October 20, with racing Thursday through Sunday. Nine teams, each representing a regional sailing association from around the country, plus the club’s home team, will contest the regatta. Winners will be awarded the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy. The event is hosted by Texas Corinthian Yacht Club and sponsored by Regatta Craft Mixers

Texas Corinthian YC is no stranger to this regatta, having hosted in 1959. “Back in those days, the defending Champion hosted the Regatta the year following their victory,” says Jack Daniel, Event Chair at TCYC. “Members Bob Mosbacher, with Crew Pete Masterson and George Francisco II, won the 1958 Mallory Cup held at American Yacht Club. The 1959 Championship was won by Buddy Melges — now an honorary member at TCYC — and he went on to win the 1960 and 1961 Championships as well.”

texas corinthian yacht club

The Club has overcome quite a few challenges ahead of this year’s U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, dealing with the pandemic and hurricane damage to the property in mid-September. “We’ve made the necessary repairs, and our fleet of Sonars is well-equipped and outfitted with brand new, never-before-used suits of sails,” says Daniel.

“Even though I am not racing, I am excited to be back on the waters of Galveston Bay,” says US Sailing National Adult Sailing Championship Chair Samson Vasquez. “The team at Texas Corinthian of the volunteers have been hard at it to put on a stellar event. With this being my first year as chairman, I got lucky. All I had to do was just show up.”

“These waters were the start of my sailing journey,” he adds. “With teams from around the nation and the farthest team coming in from Hawaii, it will prove to be a slugfest.” Vasquez plans to be on the water this weekend, capturing the action via drone.

“For a small club of only 165 member families, TCYC has a history of hosting some of the finest one-design competitions of the modern era, and we can’t wait to begin the 2021 version of the U.S. Adult Sailing Championship underway this Thursday,” says Daniel.

Texas Corinthian wins Grandmasters

Published on August 15th, 2021 by Editor -->

The New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race, for skippers of at least 60 years of age and crew of at least 50 years of age, saw Texas Corinthian Yacht Club (Kemah, TX) take the title on August 13-15 in Newport, RI.

Part of the allure of the event is the chance to reconnect with old friends and like-minded sailors for three days of racing and onshore socializing. In that respect, the teams from Texas Corinthian Yacht Club and the host New York Yacht Club got their money’s worth, facing each other 10 times.

Each race was a battle and after nine races, the scoreline had the host Club on five wins and the team from the little club in Texas on four. But, regardless of the results to that point, the outcome of the 10th race would be definitive. The championship for the 10th edition of the Grandmasters Regatta would go to whichever team won the 64th and final race of the weekend.

“They were ahead at the first mark and the second mark,” said Clark Thompson, a skipper and team captain for Texas Corinthian Yacht Club.”We were ahead at the third mark. Going up the last weather leg, it could’ve been either one of us and then right at the finish it all worked out. I’ll bet we were each ahead two to three times during the race, we just happened to have the lead at the end.”

texas corinthian yacht club

The win was a first, in seven tries, at the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters event for Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, though the team has been on a roll this year, winning the two other grandmasters events held in 2021, and as a result, also taking home the Peter Wilson Trophy, which rewards the outstanding team in grandmasters team racing in the United States during the course of the year.

Winning team members were Clark Thompson (skipper, team captain), Jack Daniel, Mary Milby, Paul Thompson, Gary Ross (skipper), Ann Graham, Pierce Owens, Joel Scott, Gerard Coleman (skipper), George Francisco, Mike McCann, and Chris Stacy.

Each August the New York Yacht Club hosts three team-race regattas on consecutive weekends: the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Morgan Cup (July 30 to August 1), the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy (August 6 to 8) and the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race Regatta (August 13 to 15).

Each event utilizes the Club’s fleet of 22 Sonars (designed by member Bruce Kirby, who recently passed away). The latter two have age minimums for skippers and crew to encourage team racing as a life-long pursuit. Founded in 2003, 2000 and 2010, respectively, the three regattas are among the most competitive adult team-racing competitions in the world, annually attracting top sailors from across the country and abroad.

Texas Corinthian, which it situated on Galveston Bay, has roughly 160 members, making it approximately five percent the size of the New York Yacht Club. But team racing has become one the club’s points of emphasis.

“We have a big team and we’re able to practice a lot with the weather in Texas,” says Thompson. “That helps a lot. We probably have 30 people come out, enough so we can get out and get some practices in.”

Thompson was also quick to credit some of the more established yacht clubs in helping the TCYC climb team racing’s steep learning curve.

“What I love about the team racing is how much everybody helps each other,” he says. “Noroton [Yacht Club in Darien, Conn.] came down and helped us when we first started, and we all talk afterwards and compare notes. Even there at the end, we were kind of pulling for New York, we knew they were kind of pulling for us, just not quite as much as for their own team. It was a fantastic series, it was nip and tuck the whole way and it came down to the final race.”

Shortly after the results were posted online, Thompson’s phone start to vibrate with congratulatory messages. Scoring a win against some of the biggest and most regarded yacht clubs in the world isn’t something the membership of TCYC will take for granted.

“They were all pulling for us and sending text messages the whole time,” Thompson said. “My phone is blowing up. I’ve probably got 20 messages of congratulations since we won. It was great knowing the whole club was behind us.”

100+ years of sailing: a history of sailing clubs on galveston bay, houston yacht club    .

Organized in 1897, the club was located on Buffalo Bayou in Houston. It was known as the Houston Yacht and Power Boat Club from 1905-1906, and the Houston Launch Club from 1906-1926. In 1927 the club went back to the original name Houston Yacht Club.

Always more than simply a social or boating organization, during the early years it was identified with some of the most fundamental developments in Houston’s growth.

The present day club house was built in 1927 in La Porte. Hurricanes and fires have left their mark on the original building but she still stands today. A charter member of the Gulf Yachting Association, the club is now over a hundred and twenty years old.

Seabrook Sailing Club

The club was founded in 1934 as a means to enjoy sailing with friends in Galveston Bay. That philosophy continues today. The original club was located along the Kemah waterfront.

In 1950 the club purchased the property at 1020 Todville Rd. in Seabrook. Hurricane Ike destroyed the club house in 2008. The new club house was rebuilt and completed through dedicated club members.

GBCA traces its origin back to 1947 when a small group of sailboat racing enthusiasts informally organized the club.   The club existed and prospered as a letter head organization, without elected officers, bylaws, dues, or a home.

The Club was formally organized in 1954 with elected officials, bylaws and handicap races. The Friday night Rum Races are some of the most popular races run on Galveston Bay.

Founded in 1955 the club sits on 38 acres with water frontage on Clear Lake. It has four covered sheds and numerous docks. Learning to Fly with Next Generation USA

W hether you are a seasoned sailor or just getting your feet wet, you can’t help but look in awe at the America’s Cup boats – fast, foiling multihulls with a wing instead of a sail.

The United States, represented by team Next Generation USA , is one of 12 countries entered in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.   Each team is allowed seven days of practice on the AC45F prior to the event in June.   That’s it, just seven days on a boat unfamiliar to anyone outside a small circle of America’s Cup Teams.

The AC45F is sailed with six crew members and each one has a critical job.  The wing controls the overall power of the boat, so it is in constant motion.  In order to get foiling, the boat needs to be going at least 16 knots and all of the crew must be on the windward side.  Getting up to speed is like taking off in an airplane. The adrenaline is pumping but no one seems concerned that they are screaming downwind, six feet above the water on a 45ft carbon rocket.

Next Generation USA is more than just a group of young sailors. These guys are the face of our country and they will be representing the USA at the highest level of sailing.
