Windward Yachts

What differentiates a yacht from a superyacht or a mega yacht?

megayacht definition

Yachts are an ultimate symbol of luxury, style, and sophistication. These sleek vessels take passengers on journeys through the seas, with all the amenities of a luxurious hotel. Yachts come in three categories- Yachts, Superyachts, and Mega Yachts- each with its own distinct characteristics and features.

Main differences between a yacht and a boat

One of the major difference between a yacht and a boat is the size. Generally, a yacht is a larger vessel that can accommodate more people and offer more space for comfortable living. On the other hand, a boat is smaller and may have limited space. Yachts usually come with luxurious amenities such as upscale furnishings, state-of-the-art equipment, and top-notch technology.

Another significant difference between yachts and boats is the purpose of use. A yacht is mostly used for pleasure cruising and traveling over long distances, while a boat is typically used for fishing, water skiing, or as a means of transport. Yachts are known to have better stability and are therefore ideal for traveling long distances and in choppy waters.

In terms of performance, yachts are designed to be faster and offer a smoother ride, thanks to their size and more powerful engines. They can travel at higher speeds for longer periods, making them suitable for longer trips. Boats are typically not as fast or efficient and may require some upgrades to increase their performance.

Features and Comfort are required to be called a Yacht

When it comes to distinguishing between boats and yachts, size is not the only determining factor. A yacht should provide a level of luxury and comfort that goes beyond basic functionality. Some of the key features that are expected in a yacht include top-of-the-line engines, advanced navigation technology, and spacious living quarters.

In terms of comfort, a yacht should be equipped with luxurious amenities such as high-end furniture, plush bedding, and state-of-the-art entertainment systems. It should also offer ample space for entertaining guests, whether that means a large sun deck for hosting cocktail parties or a spacious dining area for serving gourmet meals.

When it comes to cruising, a yacht should offer a smooth ride even in choppy waters. This requires a sturdy hull design, advanced stabilizers, and powerful engines that can propel the vessel through the water at high speeds.

In addition to these features, a yacht should also offer a high level of customization options. Owners should be able to personalize the interior design to meet their individual tastes, and there should be ample storage space for their personal belongings.

Megayachts are the epitome of luxurious travel on the open seas, and they boast an extensive range of features and equipment that are unmatched in smaller vessels. One of the most prominent features on a megayacht is its massive size, which allows for the inclusion of multiple decks complete with swimming pools, sun loungers, and even outdoor cinemas. These yachts are also equipped with top-of-the-line entertainment systems, including state-of-the-art sound and video equipment, as well as high-speed internet connectivity. But it’s not just about the entertainment; megayachts also come equipped with facilities like helipads, submarines, and jet skis, enabling travellers to access areas that are typically inaccessible by sea. Additionally, the interior design of megayachts is simply breathtaking, featuring opulent lounges, spacious cabins, and world-class dining and cooking facilities.

Megayacht VS. Superyacht

A yacht is known as a luxury watercraft that helps people having the enjoyment of recreation. Two terms that fall under a “yacht” are “megayacht” and “superyacht”. Both terms often get used interchangeably, but in this blog, we will discuss the differences.

Ranging from 80 feet in length up to the staggering 592 feet of AZZAM, the world’s largest private yacht, superyachts can be sailing yachts, motor yachts, motor sailors – or even stylishly converted tugs, or military vessels. In general, yachts are either considered a motor yacht or sailing yacht, depending on how the boat is powered. A sailing yacht is powered by sails or winds, while a motor yacht is powered by engines.

The term “megayacht” is often used interchangeably with the term “superyacht”, which is used to refer to any privately owned yacht over 80 feet in length.

Superyachts for sale and megayachts for sale can vary enormously in size, yacht price, facilities and performance. Some yachts are used exclusively for owners use or are available for part time commercial charter.

Luxury yachts typically offer a huge guest area, giving people the options for both entertainment as well as relaxation in such yachts. These vessels are commercially operated (motor or sail powered) and are professionally crewed.

Superyachts Explained

Although there is no true definition, a superyacht is considered to be a yacht that is at least 78-feet or 24-meters. A superyacht is synonymous with luxury and glamor, affording families and friends the freedom to travel the world’s most glittering destinations in ultimate comfort and privacy.

A superyacht will normally be crewed, and have luxurious accommodations for 6 to 12 guests, as well as sophisticated communal living areas. Superyachts for sale offer elegant entertaining and dining areas, while most come with Jacuzzis, swim platforms on the waterline, and a huge array of watertoys.

Megayachts Explained

Exact definitions of mega yachts vary tremendously, although some believe that around 200 feet or 60-meters is the starting size for a mega yacht for sale.

The larger superyachts for sale (often mega yachts) will sometimes have special passenger licenses allowing them to accommodate more than 12 guests. Mega yachts generally carry large crews to offer a simply spectacular level of service, with guest-to-crew ratios only dreamt of in elite hotels.

On megayachts, gyms, spas, helipads, private owners deck and even cinemas become standard features, while many sport palatial beach clubs, high-speed chase boats, and even submarines. The general facilities are almost the same for both super yachts and the mega yachts, whereas, the mega yachts are quite bigger in size.

It is useful, however, to know that the term ‘mega yacht’ is not a universally- recognized term and its exact meaning is debated, although it has gained common currency in the United States and in mainstream media around the world.

Mega Yacht vs Superyacht: Unraveling the Differences

13th oct 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

Superyacht vs. megayacht—the definitions are oft-debated, and industry professionals have yet to fully agree. But as yachts get bigger by the year it’s a subject that keeps evolving.

Is it based on size alone or also function? Is it yet another debate between proponents of the British language and that of the Americans? Here we’ll take a look at all the sides of the argument and see how what was once “I say tom-ah-to you say to-may-to” may, in fact, be on its way to an important and necessary definition in the superyacht world.

superyacht

What is a Superyacht?

For as far back as we look, the marine industry has always defined boats and yachts, categorizing them by their main function or style. From center consoles to schooners, trawlers to catamarans, we have a category for them all. The term superyacht, however, has always been based predominantly on size—yachts over 80 feet to be precise—and of course they had to be luxurious, too. No-one is calling a 90-foot commercial fishing boat a superyacht, but a 90-foot luxury sportfishing model by Viking Yachts fits the bill just fine. The other major criteria to be classified as a superyacht—apart from being privately owned—is to have a full-time captain and crew (as opposed to the owner being the captain). The only true bottom line, however, is that the industry has long agreed that superyachts were the largest and most elite vessels in the world.

What is a Megayacht?

Here the definitions get trickier. Even the spelling isn’t fully agreed upon yet as some write mega yacht, others megayacht. For a long time, the term megayacht was the more common term for large luxury yachts in the United States, while in Europe they have always been superyachts. But that picture is certainly changing now, because of the emergence of some true behemoths of yachts.

A decade ago a 180-foot or 55-meter superyacht was considered big. These days, that superyacht is dwarfed by some gargantuan vessels ranging all the way up to the very largest private yacht in the world, Azzam , at 590 feet in length. It seems logical therefore that we need a different classification to separate a 35-meter superyacht from a 350-meter one. And the term megayacht has fit nicely into that space. While industry insiders are not all aligned, most categorize a megayacht as being larger than a superyacht—some say over 260 feet (80 meters), others classify a megayacht as over 200 feet (60 meters). But as we’ll see below, gross tonnage, the crew and guests, as well as safety, maintenance, and management also play a role in this new classification.

The world’s megayachts are a sight to behold and are often the driving force of the yachting world’s innovation. Some of the most famous include Eclipse at 533 feet (162.5m) one of the first megayachts built back in 2010, Dubai at 531 feet (162m), Blue at 525 feet (160m), and A+ at 483 feet (147.25m). The largest sailing yacht is Sailing Yacht A at 468 feet (142.81m). For more examples check out the megayachts for sale on Rightboat.

megayacht

Superyacht vs Megayacht: What Are the Main Differences?

Megayacht vs superyacht size and length.

For those using the term megayacht as a classification of yacht larger than a superyacht, the generally accepted size, as mentioned, is a private luxury yacht over either 200 or 260 feet (60 or 80m). But actually it’s more than just length that is playing a deciding role. Gross tonnage in shipping dictates how a vessel is operated, and any vessels over 3000GT will have a whole different set of regulations. Some yachts over 200 feet long are above 3000GT and almost all yachts over 260 feet exceed 3000GT, so it seems logical that this definition stands. There are exceptions, such as the 278.8 feet (85m) Victorious , for example, whose gross tonnage is 2,291GT. While certainly a superyacht, is she a megayacht? Based on overall length, we’d have to say yes, but the captain’s qualifications, the number of guests she can accommodate, and the safety and management regulations will be quite different.

white and blue yacht

Megayacht vs superyacht crew and guests

When talking about yachts over 3000GT, there are many operational regulations that change considerably above and below 3000GT, especially the captain’s qualifications. Instead of just 12 guests, they are able to accommodate many more overnight passengers and the guest-to-crew ratios are greatly increased. In essence, a private yacht over 3000GT will need to be classified and run as though it is a commercial vessel with regards the captain, crew, and passengers.

Does the type of crew makes a difference to the classification? Yes, a yacht over 3000GT is more likely to have masseuses, dive instructors, personal trainers, watersports instructors, and Michelin chefs, but that doesn’t mean superyachts can’t also have them (and there are many that do).

crew and guests

Megayacht vs superyacht cost

It makes sense that the larger the yacht, the more it will cost, but the price tag isn’t necessarily a defining characteristic of whether a yacht is a superyacht or a megayacht. In fact, the most expensive superyacht ever built is History Supreme , worth $4.8 billion. What is most surprising here though is that History Supreme is ‘just’ 100 feet long. It is, among other extravagances, inlaid with 24-carat gold, which helps explain the price tag, but it’s a perfect example of how cost doesn’t define megayacht status. As a comparison, estimates of Azzam ‘s cost are just under $600 million to build. Having said that, there are industry insiders who believe that an extremely high level of service and facilities can raise a superyacht into the megayacht realm. Read on to find out which are the most expensive yachts in the world?

Superyachts, Megayachts, and Gigayachts?

Before we’ve even come to a final consensus on the definition of a megayacht, we encounter the term gigayacht. To look at the possible need for yet another classification we go back to our example of Azzam at 590 feet long. Should an almost-600-foot ultra-luxury private yacht be categorized the same as a 260-foot yacht? Many in the industry think not, that it provides a better categorization of the biggest of the big yachts in an industry producing ever-larger designs. Others roll their eyes, however. Whether the terms mega- and giga are just marketing spinners or a genuine need for classification of the ever-growing luxury yachts being launched is, for now, a case of “Watch this space.”

megayacht definition

Superyacht vs megayacht

Published 05 September 2022

Most people define a superyacht as a vessel used for pleasure, which is larger than 24m (80ft) and has full-time captain and crew employed all year round. This is therefore quite different to a smaller privately owned yacht, captained by its owner, with perhaps one or two temporary crew to assist them in the summer.

The 91.5m (300.1ft) Oceanco TRANQUILITY, for sale with Burgess, has an internal volume of 2,998GT

The dividing line between superyachts and megayachts however is more blurred, and there is no strict or commonly agreed definition.  If a dividing line was to be proposed on length, then many would agree that this would be around the 80m (260ft) mark, but there is no hard line and some industry insiders also use the gross tonnage (volume) as the dividing line, 3,000GT being a line that a lot of regulations follow. It could also be said that the word superyacht can be used in a more inclusive way, and that all megayachts are superyachts, but not all superyachts are megayachts.

The Lurssen-built CAIPIRINHA is 60m (196.9ft)

To explain, just a decade ago a 60m (200ft) was considered mega. Today there are yachts being built that are as large as 180m (590ft). As the size of yachts continues to grow so does the need for observers to demarcate the elite 100m+ (330ft+) yachts, and with this comes the introduction of the hyperbolic terms megayacht and even gigayacht.

AZZAM, the world's longest private yacht at the time of writing, is 180m (590.6ft)

However, most would agree that today’s megayachts are 80m+ (260ft+) with a minimum of 25 crew who operate the vessel all year round using largely rotational crew and run to a high commercial shipping standard.

What is the difference between a superyacht and megayacht?

Built by Kleven in Norway, ANDROMEDA, at 107.4m (352.4ft), has an interior volume of 5,937GT

Megayachts are run more along the lines of a cruise ship or passenger ship and follow many of the same regulations whereas superyachts can still, at least to some extent, follow a more bespoke pattern defined by its owner. This is not to say that a megayacht does not go or do what its owner wants it to do, but there are much stricter regulations in place for yachts over 3,000GT, including full merchant navy certification for all deck and engineering officers.

Length vs gross tonnage

The 156m (511.8ft) Lurssen yacht DILBAR has an internal volume of 15,917GT

The simplest way to explain the difference between length and size of a superyacht is with the 157m (512ft) DILBAR. The megayacht is the fifth largest yacht in the world by length (in June 2022), but with a gross tonnage of 15,917GT, in volume terms she is actually the largest yacht in the world (although she is soon to be overtaken by the in-build 183m (600ft) REV OCEAN). Compare DILBAR to the longest yacht in the world, the 180m (590ft) AZZAM, which has a gross tonnage of 13,136GT, and you can see that longest and largest are two different things.

The 92.4m (303.2ft) Nobiskrug-built TATOOSH, for sale with Burgess, has an internal volume of 3,229GT

When it comes to gross tonnage the big step-changes with regard to shipping regulations are 500GT and 3,000GT. Being over 80m-long all megayachts are over 3,000GT. The likes of the 108m (354.2ft) IJE, for example, is 3,3670GT and is operated by a crew of 30, and similarly the 92.4m (303.2ft) TATOOSH has a gross tonnage of 3,229.

The 85m (278.8ft) AKYACHT-built VICTORIOUS, for sale and charter with Burgess, has an internal volume of 2,291GT

However, a yacht like the 85m (278.8ft) AKYACHT VICTORIOUS , for example, at 2,291GT, is a bona fide superyacht at the very top end of that definition, but significantly she is well under 3,000GT. In fact, the difference between managing yachts under and over 3,000GT is quite significant, including for example different captain’s qualifications between a Master 3000, designed for superyacht helming of yachts under 3,000GT, and a Master (Yachts) Unlimited, which enables that captain to run any vessel of any size, even the Queen Mary 2 or a supertanker.

Benefits: what makes a superyacht a superyacht?

The 70m (229.7ft) Feadship JOY sleeps up to 19 crew

Synonymous with luxury and glamour, a superyacht typically offers owner and guests the freedom to travel the world in ultimate comfort and privacy. A superyacht will be professionally crewed, providing its owner and guests with spectacular service, including a captain, chef, engineer and chief stewardess as a minimum.

The beach club on the 96.6m (316.8ft) Feadship FAITH, for charter with Burgess, opens on three sides and sits beneath a glass-bottomed pool

Ranging from two decks to up to three or four decks for guests, a superyacht will have sumptuous accommodations for between six and 12 guests, as well as luxurious communal living areas, both inside and out on deck. From entertaining and dining areas to beach clubs, swim platforms and sun decks, along with watertoys, superyachts are designed entirely for relaxation and fun, with no other commercial purpose.

The 40.8m (133.8ft) Benetti REBECA is the first of the shipyard's Oasis 40 semi-custom range

Most of the largest superyachts are custom built, representing the pinnacle of design and craftsmanship, while the smaller range of superyachts, between 30-40m (100-130ft) are usually built on a semi-custom platform with their own unique interior design. However, rest assured almost every superyacht, be it a 24m (80ft) or an 80m (260ft), will carry some watertoys to keep every guest entertained while on board, along with a tender to escort guests ashore at their whim and in comfort.

B enefits: what makes a megayacht a megayacht?

The 73m (239.4ft) Lurssen TITANIA, for charter with Burgess, has a huge selection of toys and plenty of deckhands to show you how they're all used

Aside from having all of the same facilities and amenities of a superyacht, a megayacht will sometimes have special passenger licenses allowing them to accommodation and carry more than 12 guests at the same time. Guest to crew ratios are also greatly increased, with crew numbers on the largest megayachts reaching 80+, sometimes including Michelin-star trained chefs, masseuses, beauty therapists, dive instructors and personal trainers, as well as captains (often on a rotational basis), chief engineer and engineers, first officer, first mate, chief stewardess, a number of deckhands and stewardesses.

Some large yachts even have hangars for their helicopters

Megayachts will have their own gyms, spas, helipads, helicopter hangars, cinema rooms, spa pools and swimming pools, private owners’ decks or even apartments, and beach clubs to rival some of the best on land. Some come with their own chase boats, while others may cruise in tandem with a support vessel to carry all manner of watertoys and other equipment, including submarines.

While these terms are often used interchangeably, discerning enthusiasts know that there are subtle yet significant differences between the two.

In this comprehensive guide, we embark on a journey to uncover the distinctions that set Superyachts and Mega Yachts apart. From their impressive dimensions and lavish amenities to their tailored design and sheer extravagance, each class of yacht offers a unique experience on the waves. Whether you are a seasoned sailor, a yacht aficionado, or simply captivated by the allure of luxury at sea, this guide will provide you with the insights to appreciate and distinguish these magnificent vessels. So, come aboard as we sail through the fascinating world of Superyachts and Mega Yachts!

Defining Superyachts and Mega Yachts

Superyacht vs Mega Yacht - What_s the Difference

Superyachts and Mega Yachts are the pinnacle of luxury and extravagance in the world of yachting. While both terms are often used to describe large, luxurious vessels, there are distinct characteristics that differentiate them.

A Superyacht is typically defined as a private luxury yacht that measures between 24 meters (about 79 feet) and 60 meters (about 197 feet) in length. These vessels are renowned for their lavish amenities, sophisticated design, and personalized service. Superyachts are often privately owned and offer a wide range of onboard features, such as spacious cabins, gourmet dining areas, helipads, swimming pools, and state-of-the-art entertainment facilities. These yachts are designed to provide the utmost comfort and privacy to their esteemed guests, and they are usually crewed by a team of highly-trained professionals to cater to every need.

On the other hand, a Mega Yacht surpasses the dimensions of a Superyacht and is defined as a luxury vessel that measures over 60 meters (about 197 feet) in length. Mega Yachts are the epitome of exclusivity and splendor, boasting extravagant features such as multiple decks, luxurious lounges, opulent suites, and often even a private spa or cinema. These impressive vessels are owned by the world’s most affluent individuals, and their immense size allows for a higher level of customization and personalization to cater to the owner’s unique preferences.

It is essential to recognize that the distinction between a Superyacht and a Mega Yacht is based on their size, with the length threshold of 60 meters being the key differentiating factor. Both types of yachts offer an unparalleled experience of luxury and sophistication, but the Mega Yacht category takes extravagance to even greater heights, catering to the desires of the most discerning clientele on the high seas.

Importance of Size and Length in Classifying Yachts

Size and length play a crucial role in classifying and categorizing yachts, differentiating them from regular vessels and indicating the level of luxury and opulence they offer.

Superyachts, as mentioned earlier, generally fall within the length range of 24 meters (approximately 79 feet) to 60 meters (approximately 197 feet). These vessels are notably spacious and grand, often boasting multiple decks and luxurious accommodations. Superyachts are known for providing an exceptional level of comfort and style to their guests, making them a popular choice among high-net-worth individuals and celebrities seeking the ultimate luxury cruising experience.

In contrast, Mega Yachts surpass the 60-meter length threshold, making them even more extravagant and opulent in comparison to Superyachts. With their increased size, Mega Yachts can accommodate an array of additional luxury amenities, making them ideal for hosting large parties, events, or extended stays on the water. These yachts are essentially floating mansions, featuring private suites, grand lounges, spacious decks for entertaining, and sometimes even helicopter landing pads or onboard spas. The sheer magnitude of a Mega Yacht allows for unparalleled customization and design possibilities, ensuring that every aspect of the vessel aligns perfectly with the owner’s tastes and preferences.

In summary, the length of a yacht is a key determinant in distinguishing between Superyachts and Mega Yachts. While both types of vessels offer exceptional luxury and service, Mega Yachts’ larger size provides even more opportunities for indulgence, making them the epitome of extravagance on the open seas.

Level of Luxury and Design Features Found in Both Superyachts and Mega Yachts

Superyacht vs Mega Yacht - What_s the Difference

Both Superyachts and Mega Yachts are renowned for their opulent interiors, cutting-edge technology, and lavish amenities, providing an unparalleled level of luxury and comfort to their owners and guests.

Superyachts are designed with meticulous attention to detail, featuring sumptuous furnishings, high-end materials, and sophisticated décor. These vessels often boast spacious living areas, elegant lounges, and well-appointed cabins, ensuring that guests feel pampered and relaxed throughout their journey. State-of-the-art technology is integrated seamlessly into the yacht’s design, offering top-notch entertainment systems, advanced navigation equipment, and high-speed internet connectivity.

As we ascend to the realm of Mega Yachts, the level of luxury reaches even greater heights. These larger vessels can accommodate more elaborate design concepts and facilities, often incorporating additional amenities that elevate the onboard experience to an unparalleled standard.

Mega Yachts may feature sprawling beach clubs, complete with watersports equipment and relaxation areas right at water level. Some Mega Yachts also include helipads, allowing for seamless and stylish arrivals and departures via private helicopters. With multiple decks and expansive interior spaces, Mega Yachts offer a more generous layout for both social gatherings and intimate relaxation, creating a sense of spaciousness and freedom rarely found in other types of yachts.

From lavish spa facilities to fully-equipped gyms and even movie theaters, Mega Yachts epitomize luxury living on the water, providing a level of indulgence that is second to none. Every inch of these extraordinary vessels is carefully designed to cater to the owner’s desires, offering an unmatched combination of comfort, elegance, and sophistication.

In conclusion, both Superyachts and Mega Yachts are esteemed for their opulent interiors, advanced technology, and luxurious amenities. However, Mega Yachts excel in their ability to accommodate an even more extensive array of facilities, making them the epitome of extravagance and luxury at sea.

Accommodation Capacity of Superyachts and Mega Yachts

Both Superyachts and Mega Yachts are designed to accommodate a significant number of guests and crew members, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for everyone onboard.

Superyachts typically have a generous accommodation capacity, with spacious cabins and living areas that can comfortably host a sizeable number of guests. These yachts often have a crew-to-guest ratio that ensures impeccable service and attention to detail. While Superyachts offer ample space for socializing and relaxation, the number of guests they can accommodate may vary depending on their size and layout.

As we delve into the realm of Mega Yachts, the accommodation capacity reaches an even grander scale. Mega Yachts are renowned for their ability to host large gatherings and events, making them the perfect venue for luxurious parties or corporate retreats. With multiple decks and expansive interior spaces, Mega Yachts can cater to an extensive number of guests while maintaining a sense of exclusivity and privacy. The cabins on Mega Yachts are not only more spacious but are also designed to exude elegance and sophistication, offering guests a truly luxurious retreat at sea.

Moreover, Mega Yachts can provide an equally spacious and well-designed accommodation for their crew members. A well-tended and contented crew is essential for the smooth operation and service on such vast vessels, and Mega Yachts ensure that their crew members have comfortable living quarters and are well-equipped to meet the demands of a luxurious sailing experience.

In conclusion, both Superyachts and Mega Yachts boast ample accommodation capacity to cater to a considerable number of guests and crew. While Superyachts offer a generous and elegant setting, Mega Yachts take it a step further with larger and more luxurious cabins for guests and crew, making them the epitome of grandeur and extravagance on the open waters.

Ownership of Superyachts and Mega Yachts

Superyacht vs Mega Yacht - What_s the Difference

The ownership of both Superyachts and Mega Yachts is usually reserved for individuals or entities with substantial financial resources. These luxury vessels represent a significant investment, not only in terms of the initial purchase price but also in ongoing maintenance and operational costs.

Superyachts and Mega Yachts are often owned by ultra-high-net-worth individuals, which includes billionaires, successful entrepreneurs, and celebrities. These affluent owners are drawn to the prestige, exclusivity, and unparalleled luxury that these yachts offer. Owning a Superyacht or Mega Yacht allows them to indulge in their passion for yachting and provides a private retreat for leisure and entertainment.

Additionally, corporations may also own these luxurious vessels, utilizing them for business purposes or as a symbol of the company’s success and opulence. Some corporations choose to charter the yachts to clients, providing a memorable and extravagant experience that leaves a lasting impression.

While both types of yachts come with significant expenses, Mega Yachts often have higher maintenance and operational costs compared to Superyachts. The increased size and extensive features of Mega Yachts require more resources for maintenance, crew salaries, fuel, and insurance. Additionally, the ongoing expenses of keeping these vessels in pristine condition can be substantial.

Furthermore, the operational costs of these luxury yachts can vary depending on factors such as the cruising distance, duration of use, and the complexity of onboard systems and amenities. For this reason, potential owners carefully consider the financial commitment associated with owning a Mega Yacht, ensuring they have the means to sustain the vessel’s lavish lifestyle.

In conclusion, both Superyachts and Mega Yachts are often owned by ultra-high-net-worth individuals or corporations seeking unparalleled luxury and prestige. While the ownership of these vessels represents a significant financial investment, Mega Yachts, with their larger size and extensive features, tend to incur higher maintenance and operational costs. Nonetheless, for those who can afford it, the ownership of a Superyacht or Mega Yacht offers an extraordinary and unrivaled experience on the high seas.

Different Purposes and Usages of Superyachts and Mega Yachts

Superyachts and Mega Yachts are both primarily designed for leisure, entertainment, and private use by their owners or charter guests. These opulent vessels offer an unparalleled experience on the high seas, providing a luxurious and exclusive retreat for relaxation, entertainment, and adventure.

Superyachts, with their impressive amenities and luxurious interiors , cater to the desires and preferences of their owners and guests. They are often used for family vacations, social gatherings, and private parties. The spacious decks and state-of-the-art facilities onboard make them ideal for hosting intimate events and gatherings with friends and loved ones.

Mega Yachts, on the other hand, go beyond providing just a luxurious escape and can serve as venues for hosting larger-scale events or business gatherings. Their increased size and additional facilities, such as conference rooms, helipads, and expansive deck spaces, make them suitable for corporate events, product launches, and high-profile gatherings. Many Mega Yachts are equipped with advanced technology and communication systems, allowing for seamless connectivity and communication during business-related activities.

Furthermore, both Superyachts and Mega Yachts can be chartered by clients who seek an extraordinary and extravagant experience at sea. Charter guests can enjoy all the amenities and services these luxury vessels offer, without the commitment of ownership. Chartering a Superyacht or Mega Yacht allows guests to explore breathtaking destinations, indulge in gourmet dining, and experience the utmost privacy and personalized service provided by a professional crew.

Ultimately, whether it’s a Superyacht or a Mega Yacht, the primary purpose and usage revolve around providing an unparalleled level of luxury, leisure, and entertainment. These magnificent vessels offer a floating paradise, where owners and guests can escape the stresses of daily life and immerse themselves in the lap of luxury on the open waters.

A superyacht with the best limousine tender provides plenty of "billionaire bragging rights."

Each of the largest, most expensive, most over-the-top yachts in the world are custom-built creations that represent the pinnacle of creativity, craftmanship, luxury and yes… billionaire bragging rights . But the question I’m often asked is…what makes a superyacht a superyacht? Is there a minimum price, or size, or other criteria that separates “super” yachts from much more common “yachts?” Does a superyacht require its own helicopter? What about a swimming pool(s) or IMAX theater?

Guests onboard the the Onda 321L limousine tender can rocket from the mothership to the dock without ... [+] ever getting their hair messed up.

Well, the answer is, yes and no. There is no “law” that says all yachts over a certain length, price or equipment must be called superyachts. However, the largest and most expensive yachts in the world are always (and obviously) referred to superyachts. And Wikipedia only muddies the water by quoting several sources in this vague attempt at a definition: “A superyacht or megayacht is a large, luxurious, professionally crewed motor or sailing yacht, ranging from 24 meters (79 ft) to more than 180 meters (590 ft) in length. Superyachts are often available for charter with a staff that caters to guests at a high standard of comfort.”

The interior of a superyacht limo is as luxurious as you think it'd be.

So, without even getting into the question of what’s the difference between a superyacht, megayacht or “gigayacht” (the three new 300-foot-long Benetti’s that were launched earlier this year have been called “gigayachts”). Or debating the fact that all superyachts are usually equipped with a wide range of “toys” that include everything from jet skis and speedboats to personal submarines . I may have found a very simple (and universal) metric.

Superyacht limos are highly engineered to provide maximum comfort.

All superyachts are opulent enough to be equipped with an object that represents the epitome of luxury—a limousine tender—like the Onda 321L . And like most yacht limos, it’s comprised of three distinct zones. The helm is separated from the guest area in the front of the boat. The back section is comprised of a large teak swim and boarding platform, while the large covered section in the middle is a luxurious as it gets.

A superyacht limo that is deployed from the mothership is the epitome of luxury.

The interior features two hand stitched leather couches that are large enough for ten guests to travel from the mothership to anywhere on land in air-conditioned comfort. In addition, it has a number of extra features including a high-end entertainment system, espresso machine and champagne cooler.

Is your yacht tender a cross between a limo and a Ferrari?

“The Onda 321L is an outstanding luxury service boat,” George Riginos, CEO at Onda Tenders, said. “It has a special hull form that allows more space inside the cabin. Also, it starts planning at lower speeds, only from 10 knots, which is amazing. Therefore, the ride is much smoother and top speed is higher than usual for comparable tenders. It is as if a limousine was crossed with a Ferrari .

Not every superyacht is fitted out with a limousine that's crossed with a Ferrari. But I will say this: Every superyacht has a limousine.

Yacht, Superyacht, Megayacht…What’s the Difference?

A deep dive into yacht types.

In the very technical, precise, and number-loving world of yachting–be it hull length, maximum speed, year built, and so much more–there seems to be much confusion in the categories of yacht types. Those in and out of the yachting industry often hear the terms yacht, superyacht, and even megayacht thrown around casually, and, quite often, interchangeably. So what is a superyacht, really? Is the term “yacht” all-encompassing? Is “gigayacht” really a thing? Do exact numbers come into play? Read on for a deep dive into the different types of yachts.

What Is a Yacht?

megayacht definition

While the term “yacht” technically refers to any boat–sailing or motorized–that has sleeping accommodations aboard, the word is typically used for vessels under 80 feet in length. Usually used for pleasure, yachts can also be categorized as vessels specifically used for racing and/or cruising. While still the dream of many, the general term “yacht” usually refers to the “smaller” (we use that word very lightly) boats you may see cruising exotic locations.

What Is a Superyacht?

megayacht definition

Much like a yacht, a superyacht is also a luxurious vessel used for pleasure; the distinction is in its size. Much of the confusion between whether a vessel falls under the yacht, superyacht, or even megayacht category is still pretty unclear amongst industry professionals. The numbers vary depending on who you ask. Generally speaking, though, a superyacht is usually a yacht whose length exceeds 80 feet. Since it’s all so unclear, we just like to think of it in approximate rather than exact terms: a superyacht is a really large yacht. Superyachts usually have a professional crew manning the vessel.

Megayacht: Myth or Fact?

megayacht definition

But here’s where things get really puzzling. What really is “large”? Where on the spectrum do different yachts fall? And where does it end? Some industry experts have gone so far as to categorize some of the more massive yachts as “megayachts”. If “superyacht” wasn’t impressive enough, this added term has caused even more perplexity in the wide sea that is the yachting business. While the majority have not necessarily adopted this newer lingo, those that have usually use the term to roughly describe exceedingly large yachts, usually over 200 feet in length. Depending on who you ask, though, some pros argue that the term “megayacht” shouldn’t even be used.

Going Gaga for Gigayachts

megayacht definition

If yacht categories weren’t confusing enough, plus the arguments over the term “megayacht”, some shipbuilders have recently gone one step further, despite it all, and adopted yet another term for the most gigantic, crème de la crème of yachts: gigayachts. While the lines for this category are so completely blurred, it seems that these colossal yachts usually teeter over the 220-foot mark. An important factor that those who actually use this term highlight is that gigayachts are almost always custom-built, with the owner personalizing the boat to his or her liking and preferences.

Does Size Really Matter?

megayacht definition

Other than literal size–mostly gauged and compared by the length of the vessel–you may be wondering what really is the difference between all these types of yachts. Some may think: the bigger the better . This all depends on what you value most. Usually, the bigger the yacht, the bigger the crew. With more crew members available to maintain a ship and serve passengers, often the service aboard superyachts (and megayachts) is of the utmost level. On the flip side, some may feel that regular yachts are more their speed–literally; smaller yachts can sometimes reach speeds that larger vessels can’t match, upping the action. Others feel that the “smaller” (read: yet still big) yachts are more intimate, or even more livable. At the end of the boat day, it is all about personal preference. Just like all the other countless options in the yacht business, there’s more than enough to go around. There’s an ocean of options just waiting out there.

What Is a Superyacht?

A superyacht, or mega yacht, is exactly what it sounds like — a large, luxurious, professionally-crewed vessel, loaded with all the amenities you’d expect from a 5-star hotel. Starting out at a length of 24 meters (79 feet), superyachts are decked out with elegant décor, spacious berths, and come equipped with all sorts of “extras.” Expect novelties such as a jacuzzi, barbecue, sound system, a variety of water sport and fishing equipment, and much more.

How Big is A Superyacht?

According to many official sources, a superyacht has to be over 75 feet in length (23m). In reality, most superyachts range between 24 to 180 meters (79 feet to 590 feet). Most charter superyachts sleep between 6-12 people. While some are fitted out for a fiesta and are equipped to host up to 50 people, like this 50 guest party yacht in Baja, Mexico .

However it takes more than just size to reach elite superyacht status. Total extravagance is necessary to claim the superyacht title. Impressive size and over-the-top opulence unite to create this grandiose yacht, two characteristics that Boataffair requires of each member of its fleet. With a superyacht charter, customer service is also of the utmost importance. Included in the charter price is a crew of highly trained professionals, including scuba and yoga instructors, masseuses, and high-end chefs who accompany guests on the trip and ensure every need is met.

Whether you’re after a peaceful getaway or want to host the party of the year, there’s a Boataffair superyacht to fit your holiday desires and capacity requirements.

In addition to size and capacity, Boataffair’s superyacht fleet offers a number of lavish perks; from the grand living quarters of this BVI superyacht charter - to the onboard massage therapist aboard this  Christensen Superyacht . Or how about this adventure-ready vessel in Croatia , prepare to have every need met and exceeded.

How Many Mega Yachts Are There in the World?

Currently, there are more than 10,000 superyachts around the world, with another 150 newly crafted vessels entering the market every year. Here at Boataffair we boast a notable collection and currently we have over 100 superyachts available for charter in 32 different locations around the globe.

What is the Cost to Charter A Mega Yacht?

The features of magnificent mega yachts are boundless, which begs the question “how much does it cost to charter a superyacht?” While the price per charter tends to be lofty, it is possible to board a mega yacht without breaking the bank.

Superyacht charters can cost as little as €5,000 per day—and remember, that price includes a plethora of complimentary service like airport pick-up and drop-off, gourmet meals, a full bar, fresh juices, water sport and leisure equipment, barbecue set-up, national park and/or landmark entrance fees, laundry services, and a fully-staffed crew.

Those who do decide to charter a mega yacht always say the level of service, accessible entertainment, and impeccable luxury are well worth the price tag. Chartering a superyacht is ideal for a romantic getaway with a loved one or a unique venue choice to celebrate a birthday or other special events.

Regardless of the reason, one thing’s for sure: a superyacht charter won’t leave you wanting anything more from a holiday.

The World Of Luxury Yachts: Difference Between Mega Yacht And Superyacht

  • Luxury Yachts
  • The World Of Luxury Yachts:…

Mega Yacht And SuperYacht

When we speak about yachts, they are often referred to as luxury watercraft used for recreational purposes.

A luxury yacht can range from 80 feet to up to 590 feet Azzam, the largest private yacht. A luxury yacht varies in function, size, and style and can be both sail or motor-driven. You will often see the terms “super yacht” and “mega-yacht” used interchangeably, but both vary significantly in terms of price, size, and functionality.

What is a Superyacht?

There is no strict definition of what is considered a superyacht, but in general, a yacht has to be at least 78 feet to fall under this category. When we think of a superyacht, we think of the extravagance, luxury, and glamour of millionaires and billionaires who can cruise the world in the most comfortable ways possible.

A superyacht is usually crewed and has the most luxurious interiors that can beat five-star hotels. It generally provides accommodation to a minimum of 6-12 people and expertly designed common living areas.

Superyachts for sale also come along with stylish dining spaces and entertainment zones. Some are equipped with a jacuzzi, swim platforms on the waterline, and a vast selection of water toys.

What is a Megayacht?

Similar to superyachts, there is no exact definition of a mega yacht. Although it is believed that a yacht to be termed a mega yacht has to be at least 200 feet in size. Mega Yachts can carry more than 12 guests and have the license to do so. Mega Yachts often carry large private crews to offer the passengers a customized service with a guest-to-crew ratio only available in most hotels.

Mega Yachts are also equipped with gyms, spas, helipads, private decks, and more. Most megayachts might even sport high-speed chase boats, palatial beach clubs, and submarines. One of the most significant differences between megayachts and superyachts is their size.

Builder of Super Yachts and Mega Yachts

When we debate about super yachts and mega yachts, the one thing that comes to us is the builder behind these spectacular designs. Here are some of the renowned builders of mega yachts and superyachts.

Lürssen is a name that is a name that all luxury yacht enthusiasts are familiar with. Lürssen is a German superyacht builder who is responsible for building one of the largest superyachts in existence. M/Y AZZAM, a magnificent 590’ luxury yacht, was made by Lürssen within three years. They are known for their uncompromising quality and the large luxury yachts that they are known to build. M/Y KISMET, the 312 yacht, is one of Lürssen’s most famous vessels.

Feadship: Royal Dutch Shipyards

Feadship, Netherlands: The only name worth learning for some yacht owners is Feadship. Feadship is a name and brand synonymous with Dutch superyacht quality and has a legion of dedicated fans. There are 450 custom-made yachts in the Feadship fleet, including M/Y HASNA.

Heesen is a Dutch luxury yacht builder recognized for its stylish aluminum and steel superyachts and ingenious use of technology, as seen in the revolutionary fast-displacement hull form first seen in M/Y GALACTICA STAR.

Amels’ are the producers of high-value yachts and are known for their vast and high-tech super facility in the Netherlands. They create luxury yachts up to 330’, including their 2017 flagship yacht, 272’ (83m) M/Y HERE COMES THE SUN.

Yacht definitions: What is a yacht? And does it need to have sails?

  • Top stories

By far the most common question we get asked here at Motor Boat & Yachting is ‘how can you call that a yacht if it doesn’t have sails?’ Here we explain why a boat doesn’t need sails to be called a yacht...

What’s in a name? Quite a lot if you’re a yacht! Not only are the names of yachts a source of endless amusement, but by defining your boat as a yacht in the first place, you’re setting up certain expectations.

Yacht definitions: A brief history

Whilst boating for fun dates back to Ancient Egypt and possibly even further than that, the word yacht comes from the Dutch ‘jachtschip’, which means hunting ship. Jachts were originally a class of sailboat used in the 16th century to hunt down enemies of the Dutch Republic.

However by the 19th century the term ‘yachting’ had developed to mean recreational boating in general, and with the advent of steam boats, sails were no longer the only method of propulsion available to Victorian yachtsmen.

In the early 20th century (1904 to be precise), our humble magazine was launched under its original title The Motor Boat , but by the 1950s the ‘& Yachting’ suffix had been added to refer to the general pastime enjoyed by motorboat owners. We even reviewed the occasional motorsailer for those who liked to enjoy the benefits of both power and sail.

Today’s Motor Boat & Yachting is dedicated purely to powered leisure vessels from 25-125ft with the occasional foray above and below that when interest dictates. Current editor Hugo Andreae insists that he is ‘terminology agnostic’ saying, “I’m not bothered whether people refer to their boats as yachts, cruisers, power boats or gin palaces just so long as they enjoy using them. But for the record my 22ft Karnic is definitely a gigayacht!”

ceramic-pro-boat-coating-review-after-relaunch-hero

Editor Hugo’s Karnic 2250 is his family’s pride and joy, but should it be called a yacht?

What makes a yacht, a yacht?

Some would argue that a yacht has to have sails, and as we’ve seen, that was originally the case, but we here at Motor Boat & Yachting beg to differ, as its common to refer to large motorboats as motoryachts, superyachts or even megayachts without any expectation that they would have sails.

Others assert that a yacht should have to have a cabin in order for it to be fully considered a yacht, or that it has to measure at least 10m in length. If that’s the case then some longer narrowboats could be technically considered as yachts, although you’d be hard pushed to find anyone who agrees with that definition.

The final test for something to be considered a yacht is harder to pin down, but it is generally accepted that all yachts have to have a certain aesthetic or architectural appeal in order to earn this haughty moniker.

Whether a boat is worthy of being called a yacht is clearly subjective, but there’s one thing we won’t budge over – it certainly doesn’t have to have sails!

If it’s sailing yachts specifically that you’re interested in, you won’t find many of them here, but we can heartily recommend our sister titles Yachting Monthly and Yachting World , who know much more about them than we do.

Bigger yacht definitions: Superyacht, megayacht or gigayacht?

Beyond the simple term yacht, there are a few other yacht definitions worth clarifying. The most commonly used of which is superyacht .

The debate still rages over what constitutes a superyacht. Any pleasure yacht with a load line length of 24m or more (not length overall or waterline length as is often misquoted) and a gross tonnage of 80GT is classified as a Large Yacht under MCA coding rules, causing a number of additional regulations to kick in, most crucially the requirement for the skipper to hold a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. This is the closest thing to a technical definition of a superyacht.

Azzam - the world's largest superyacht on of many belonging to Middle Eastern owners

At 180m Azzam is currently the largest yacht in the world, but an 183m gigayacht called REV is currently under construction in Norway. Photo: Wikimedia Commons

However, while this used to mean most leisure boats with an overall length (LOA) of 80ft or more fell into the Large Yacht category, yards have become so adept at designing bigger boats with a load line length of just under 24m that many craft with an LOA of 90ft or more still count as regular pleasure vessels.

For that reason some people prefer to use the simpler definition of a superyacht being any privately owned vessel with an LOA of 100ft or more. Even then some would argue that a true superyacht should be a custom built yacht of at least 35m or 120ft.

Such is the inflationary pressure on yacht sizes and terminology that the term superyacht itself has begun to lose currency among the yachting elite. Owners of craft over 50m now use the term megayacht to categorise their larger vessels, while the lesser-spotted gigayacht is reserved for yachts over 100m.

Fewer than 100 gigayachts have been built to date, making this the rarest of rare breeds. That said with the world’s largest yacht now measuring over 183m, it’s surely only a matter of time before the 200m mark will be broken and yet another term will be needed. Got any suggestions? Differences Between Yachts, Superyachts, and Megayachts

Key takeaway:.

  • Yacht classifications can be confusing, with yachts being the smallest, followed by superyachts, and megayachts being the largest. The dividing line between a superyacht and a megayacht is not clearly defined, although superyachts are typically at least 80 feet long and can accommodate at least six passengers, while megayachts are usually around 200 feet long and may have licenses to carry more than 12 guests.
  • Superyachts and megayachts offer luxurious features and amenities, such as multiple decks, swimming pools, hot tubs, spas, gyms, private decks, helipads, and even submarines. Some of the most sought-after super- and mega-yachts include Azzam, Dubai 531′, Oceanco TRANQUILITY, Lurssen-built CAIPIRINHA, and the Kleven-built ANDROMEDA.
  • Chartering a yacht allows for customization of staff, chefs, and itinerary, and can even be a more affordable option for experiencing the luxury of a superyacht or megayacht. A luxury yacht offers large guest areas for entertainment and relaxation and is professionally crewed. Superyachts and megayachts for sale offer elegant entertaining and dining areas, as well as Jacuzzis, swim platforms, and watertoys.

Introduction

In the ever-changing world of luxury watercrafts, it can be hard to tell a yacht from a superyacht and megayacht . Though these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they have unique features that distinguish them.

A yacht is usually around 39 feet long and perfect for personal use or a small group. It’s ideal for short voyages, providing a comfy and enjoyable experience.

The megayacht, on the other hand, is huge, exceeding 200 feet in length. It has plenty of space for a large crew and guests, and offers a lavish and opulent experience on the water.

Between the two is the superyacht. It tops 100 feet in length and has luxuries like multiple decks, pools, and entertainment rooms. It’s smaller than a megayacht, but still offers a high level of comfort and luxury, often made to the owner’s specifications. They also come with a captain, crew, and staff to take care of your needs.

To choose the right watercraft, you should understand the differences in size, facilities, and features. Some may look like yachts, but offer amenities characteristic of superyachts or megayachts. Luxury watercrafts give unbeatable comfort and a special experience on the water.

Yacht, Superyacht, and Megayacht Definitions

Yachts, Superyachts, & Megayachts are all vessels of varying sizes, amenities, function, & price. Yachts are 80 to 120ft & cost 1 to 10mil USD. Superyachts are 121 to 230ft & cost 10 to 100mil USD. Megayachts are 231ft+ & cost over 100mil USD. See table for details.

Amenities depend on the type of yacht. Standard yachts offer fewer amenities than Superyachts/Megayachts, catering to the affluent who spend lavishly.

The Eclipse is the world’s most expensive yacht, bought by a Russian billionaire in 2010 for 590mil USD . It has 2 helipads, a disco hall, a cinema, a pool, & anti-paparazzi measures, like laser tech to spot cameras.

Features and Amenities of Superyachts and Megayachts

Superyachts and Megayachts are the epitome of luxury vessels. They offer passengers an unforgettable experience with their range of amenities! These vessels have theaters, swimming pools, multiple bars, and lavish interiors with modern decor and top-quality furnishings. Plus, they have advanced tech such as gyms, saunas, jacuzzis, and entertainment systems with immersive audio and video.

When looking at these vessels, there are several areas to consider:

  • Accommodation includes guest cabins, master suites, and crew quarters.
  • Amenities range from gyms, saunas, and jacuzzis to theaters, bars, and swimming pools.
  • Deck features are helipads, sun decks, outdoor dining, and lounge areas. Plus, water sports like jet skis, scuba diving, kayaks, and snorkeling gear.
  • Additionally, they have safety and security features such as navigation systems and security cameras.

Hiring a Superyacht or Megayacht? It’s essential to have a well-trained crew. They need knowledge about the yacht’s tech, safety protocols, and maintenance. Also, the destination and weather conditions should be taken into account.

Conclusion: Superyachts and Megayachts are the epitome of luxury. They offer passengers an extraordinary experience with their world-class amenities and features. Ensuring a qualified crew and considering the destination and weather can make for a remarkable trip.

Chartering a Yacht

Chartering a yacht is an amazing way to experience the open waters like never before! Plus, it’s exclusive and you can customize your itinerary. Yacht sizes range from 30 to 90 ft. , with superyachts offering more luxurious amenities. For the ultimate luxury, a megayacht (over 100 ft.) is hard to beat. It has built-in spas and high-end entertainment systems.

When chartering a yacht, consider your budget and desired level of luxury. Most yachts come with a captain and crew who are responsible for the vessel and provide expert navigation. Each yacht offers unique amenities, like gourmet catering, water sports equipment, and spacious lounging areas .

Think about the number of guests onboard and what kind of itinerary you’d like – whether it’s island-hopping or coastal cruising. Pick the right yacht to fit your needs. Communicate with the charter company to make sure it’s personalized and comfortable.

Don’t forget to communicate your preferences and requirements to the company and captain. Plan for any necessary paperwork. With these tips, you can enjoy a remarkable experience chartering a yacht.

To sum up, luxury cruising is about yachts, superyachts and megayachts . These vessels give you varying levels of luxury and unique experiences. Yachts are smaller and less expensive but still provide a luxurious vacation. Superyachts come with more amenities like Jacuzzis, swimming pools and even helipads. Megayachts are the most lavish, with VIP suites, top-notch entertainment systems and multiple decks.

When picking a luxury cruising vessel, you need to think of several aspects:

  • preferred amenities
  • amount of people joining the trip

Crew experience is also essential as it can significantly influence the quality of the visitors’ experience, such as handling the yacht’s operations and being aware of cruising destinations. Finally, note that the terms “ superyacht ” and “ megayacht ” are interchangeable and the size and features of a vessel may differ, no matter its class or size.

FAQs about Differences Between Yachts, Superyachts, And Megayachts

Understanding yacht classifications: yacht, superyacht, and megayacht.

Yachting classifications can be confusing with yachts, superyachts, and mega yachts. A “yacht” refers to any boat with sleeping accommodations under 80 feet. Yacht vacations offer similar perks to renting a luxury villa with the whole space to yourself. Chartering a yacht allows for customization of staff, chefs, and itinerary. On the other hand, a “superyacht” is typically at least 80 feet length and can accommodate at least six passengers. Amenities are what set superyachts and megayachts apart, with multiple pools and hot tubs, helipads, and even submarines. Meanwhile, a “megayacht” is larger than regular yachts and offers more facilities and features.

Differentiating Superyachts and Megayachts

Superyachts are yachts that are at least 78 feet or 24 meters in length and can accommodate 6 to 12 guests. Megayachts are at least 200 feet or 60 meters in length and may have special licenses to accommodate more than 12 guests. Both superyachts and megayachts offer luxurious amenities such as spas, gyms, and private decks. However, megayachts have a larger volume and size than superyachts. The dividing line between superyachts and megayachts is not clearly defined, but it could be around 80m (260ft) in length or 3,000GT in volume.

The Best Superyachts and Megayachts for Sale

Some of the most sought-after super- and mega-yachts for sale include AZZAM, Dubai 531\’, Andromeda, Oceanco Tranquility, and Lurssen-built Caipirinha. To view all superyachts for sale worldwide, consult reputable yacht brokers such as Burgess, Miami International Yacht Sales, and Denison Yacht Sales.

Motoring Through the Water: Motor Yacht vs. Sailing Yacht

Yachts can be motor or sailing-powered. Motor yachts have powerful engines and can move at higher speeds, while sailing yachts rely on the wind. Both offer plush interiors and large guest areas for entertainment and relaxation, professionally crewed by staff who can customize chef and itinerary.

Charter a Superyacht or Megayacht

Both superyachts and megayachts are available for part-time commercial charter, with ports of call ranging from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean. Chartering a yacht allows for customization of staff, chefs, and itinerary, enabling guests to enjoy a luxurious and memorable vacation surrounded by sea and sun.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Mega-Yachts (and Their Owners)

Question number one: do they need more friends.

megayacht definition

Yacht-setters, i.e. the maritime equivalent to jet-setters, circle the globe on mega yachts, the price tags of which can easily equal the yearly-budgets for a small nation. But don’t think it’s easy being rich — these gazillionairs have their yachting woes . The Biggie: when their mega yacht breaks down in a foreign port.

I asked Sean Blue, Head of Global Watercraft for AIG Private Client Group (which represents the owners of more that 300 80-foot-plus super yachts worldwide), to tell me about mega yachts and their owners .

Who are the owners of super yachts? I can’t divulge our clients, but I can share that mega yacht owners include CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, captains of industry, entertainers, engineers, inventors, rulers, owners of manufacturing companies, billionaires, and generally people who are leaders in their fields. Mega yachts are generally defined as yachts greater than 100 feet or longer, all the way up to the current largest yacht in the world — AZZAM, which is 180.6 meters long (594 feet).

Tell me about the distances these yachts can navigate. This depends on the specifications of the yacht and what it was designed for . Some are not designed to travel long distances and instead are built for speed, or for local cruising, or with maybe enough range to make a trans-Atlantic crossing safely. But others are built with an incredible amount of range in mind and can travel some 8,000 nautical miles without refueling, while others are designed to explore arctic regions, or both. Circumnavigations are not uncommon and large yachts regularly make ocean transits — whether cruising from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, or en route to Fiji across the Pacific. The only real limitations are time and money. And for most mega yacht owners, it’s just time.

Are these really ships — how do you differentiate a yacht from a ship? Some of them really are ships and are built that way, but the difference lies in how they are used. A yacht is a vessel built for the pleasure of her owner. The best yachts are built to commercial ship standards in terms of seaworthiness, safety, and technology; often times even a higher standard.

How about the price tag for these yachts? $1,000,000 a meter is the rule of thumb, but this can vary depending on the design, builder, systems, interiors and a great many other things. The largest yacht currently in the world, AZZAM, is reported to have cost over $700M to build. In addition to the yachts themselves are the interior décors and furnishings, wine collections, fine art collections, and its “toys” and tenders (support vessels).

What happens when a yacht breaks down on the other side of the globe? Mega yachts are managed and run by highly trained professionals from the captains and crews to the yacht managers that are often hired to manage all the aspects of owning and running a yacht. Not unlike the world of aviation, maintenance is ongoing, so an all-out breakdown on the water whereby you have a dead ship is a relatively rare occurrence. Fire aboard a yacht is actually a little more common, which is the primary source of large losses on yachts that AIG has seen, and something to which we pay a lot of attention by providing shipboard fire training for crews and local firefighters in seaside communities. Whether it’s a breakdown or a fire, after the initial response to save lives and property, the yacht may call for assistance from a neighboring ship or vessel and in some cases call a towing or salvage company for assistance to get the yacht back to the nearest safest port to evaluate damage and decide on next steps. That is usually when specialty insurers are called to facilitate the logistics and repairs.

What if it just needs work? Most of the work performed on a super yacht is performed by its crew. If there is need beyond that, specialists can be flown in from all around the world. Larger yachts are like big commercial buildings with air conditioning systems, watermakers, plumbing, electrical, hydraulics, refrigeration, and virtually any mechanical system you can imagine. If expertise is not available locally, you get the experts to come to you.

Where do they go for repairs? The best local place they can find that can address the yacht’s specific need. There are numerous facilities around the world that can accommodate and repair mega yachts, but as you get farther from the Western world, these facilities may not specialize or deal with yachts everyday and may be more directed toward commercial work and a more industrial level of care and finish quality. Often in these situations, repairs are made for the safety and seaworthiness of the yacht and cosmetics are handled at a later date at a facility specializing in the high level of yacht fitting and finish.

Does work need to be done on dry land? Some works can be accomplished while the yacht is in the water , even if it involves work to the bottom or propulsion or stabilizer equipment and that may sometimes be a safer and less expensive route if it’s feasible, but some maintenance and repair does require a haul out on land or dry dock.

How much does a typical yacht weigh? There really is not a typical yacht, and the weight can vary greatly. Yachts are generally measured in gross tonnage, which is a volumetric measurement.  A yacht at the smaller end of the Mega Yacht segment, such as a 112-foot Westport, displaces 275,000 pounds and carries a gross tonnage of 207 gross tonnes. AZZAM, the largest yacht in the world, which is  590 feet long and was built by Lurssen in Germany, is reported to be over 13,000 gross tonnes.

Are there places in the U.S. that repair yachts? The U.S. is blessed with many great facilities around the country and on every coast that are capable of repairing and refitting yachts and mega yachts.   Some are boat and ship yards that are also involved in building yachts, while some are mixed between private and commercial work, and others cater exclusively to the mega yacht community. South Florida is certainly an area of concentration for these facilities, but not the only region where one can find them.

Are there cranes capable of lifting these heavy yachts? Travel lifts can accommodate some pretty large yachts, but at a certain size, a dry-dock might be necessary and in these cases, this can certainly limit your options on where your yacht can be hauled and repaired.

An aside: Marine Group Boat Works in San Diego caters to mega yacht owners. Its six-story traveling crane is capable of lifting 665-tons. Each tire (there are 16) stands a foot taller than a grown man.  The crane is said to be the strongest mobile crane in the U.S. It made record books when the 626 ton mega-yacht Ronin (previously owned by billionaire Larry Ellison – now owned by Venezuelan banker Victor Vargas ), became the largest private yacht ever to be lifted by a moving crane.

MEGA YACHT, SUPER YACHT OR GIGA YACHT? WHAT TO CALL THE WORLD'S LARGEST YACHTS

There is no looking away when a large luxury yacht sails into view. the biggest super yachts in the world will always mesmerize and intrigue us, whether we are gazing at them from land or sea. but what to call these most expensive super yachts in the world there are no solid definitions when it comes to deciding if a boat is a super yacht, a mega yacht, or a giga yacht. or is that big boat just a yacht there is some general consensus on terminology, however, and several factors come into play when attempting to define the largest yachts in the world:.

IN THE TIME BEFORE SUPER YACHTS

Maritime history places private yachting in existence as early as the 1600s. At that time, boats began to be used occasionally as recreational vessels, rather than just as work boats. Later, private citizens, not just royalty, eventually began to own their own boats. These were separated from functional craft and the word "yacht" came into play.

LENGTHS OF A SUPER YACHT, MEGA YACHT, AND GIGA YACHT

A boom in large yacht construction blossomed around the time of the Industrial Revolution in the United States. As this era of wealth grew for family names such as Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, and Vanderbilt, so did interest in the luxuriousness of these yachts, which they often saw as an extension of their family mansions. Since these boat owners were seldom mariners themselves, they hired crew to help run these vessels. The largest of these large boats of the time were considered yachts.

Girl in a jacket

The length overall of a boat - for both powerboats and sailboats - is the first clue to how it is named in the yacht-industry nomenclature. Many maritime businesses will use the term super yacht for vessels at least 80 feet (24 meters) in length, while some consider super yachts to be a minimum of 100 feet in length (30 meters).

Many people use the terms super yacht and mega yacht interchangeably, while others believe a mega yacht starts at 200 feet (60 meters). There is also some consensus that an extremely high level of service from the onboard crew can bump a superyacht into the megayacht realm.

But as the largest of the yachts continue to grow in length, even the term mega yacht seems insufficient. Faster than the largest yacht in the world can be crowned, plans are already drawn up to exceed its length.

Should the largest, nearly 600-foot-long yacht fall into the same naming category as the 200-foot yacht? Probably not. For this reason, many more in the maritime industry will put the largest of the large luxury yachts into the giga yacht group. Similarly, the immense vessels that are still in the idea/discussion phase are called giga yacht concepts.

MEGA YACHT REGIONS

There are informal regional trends when it comes to naming the largest of the super-, mega-, and giga yachts. Although English is the primary language in much of North America and Europe, English can seem like two different languages when comparing London with New York. This is also true with yacht terminology.

Often the European yachting industry uses the term superyacht (or super yacht) while the United States more frequently uses the term megayacht (or mega yacht). As the yacht industry continues to grow, the use of super to describe a large, luxury yacht seems to be more predominant worldwide.

SUPER YACHT LEGALESE

Another factor that helps define boats is the legal aspect as described by several maritime groups. Whether the boat in question is the smallest rowboat, dinghy, or tender, or the biggest boat in the world, international and local regulations hold a few clues.

One international governing body is the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) based in the United Kingdom. This British agency legislates and guides the maritime industry with national and international support and has been a leader in internationally recognized definitions.

According to the MCA's Large Commercial Yacht Code's definition, "Large means 24 meters and over in load line length and the Code of Practice applies to yachts which are in commercial use for sport or pleasure, do not carry cargo, and do not carry more than 12 passengers."

MEGA YACHT CREW

The presence of hired crew onboard definitely lends itself to referring to a boat as a yacht. As soon as captain, engineer, purser, deckhand, bosun, stewardess, stew, and chef are in uniform and on duty to serve the owner, the tendency is to use the term yacht in any form, whether a super yacht, a mega yacht, or a giga yacht.

So, with no "official" rules in play, you can use your own judgement and preference when calling a vessel, a boat, a yacht, a super yacht, a mega yacht, or a giga yacht.

When Does a Boat Become a Yacht or Superyacht? (Sizes)

when does a boat become a yacht

Yachting is the epitome of watertop luxury. Designed as one of the most sophisticated and comfortable vessels out there, the yacht seems come fully equipped with all the amenities you could ever hope for on a boat - and much more. In fact, some yachts can have tennis courts, helipads, and even full sized swimming pools, which means these boats can get crazy big.

Today, the yacht comes in a range of sizes, which is why some of them have been given the designation 'superyacht'. But when does a boat become a yacht, and when is it a superyacht? Here's what you need to know about this boat and its sizes.

What Size is Called a Yacht?

super yacht

Just for the sake of information, we're going to go ahead and define what a yacht is first. The term yacht actually has its origins in the Dutch word jaght - a word that means 'hunter'. They used to call it such because these vessels were originally used to chase and catch pirate boats at the time. So the sporty marine vessel had to be quick to move.

But in the 1660's, the Dutch yacht was used to transport royalty, which changed people's perception of the boat from a sporty pirate-catching vessel to a means for important people to travel.

These days though, the definition of what a yacht is versus a boat can be pretty blurry. In fact, there is no standard definition on what can be called a yacht. So a yacht is any boat that has a cabin and facilities that can accommodate overnight use.

In terms of sizes, the yacht comes in a wide range. Size categories include:

Craft or Cruiser

This is a term used to describe any basic vessel less than 12 meters or 39 feet long, with a cabin and overnight amenities. The smallest are typically 35-foot personal yachts, and the look like a sailboat.

The term yacht refers to a vessel between 13 meters and 24 meters in length (78 feet.)

The superyacht is defined as a vessel 24 meters to 85 meters in length (278 feet.)

The superyacht and megayacht terms are often used interchangeably because they mean the same thing. Sources argue that the superyacht is the British term to describe a boat or ship 24 meters to 85 meters in length, while the other is the American term for a yacht of the same length.

For reference, the biggest yacht in the world measures 222 meters or 728 feet long. This places it in the category of giga yacht. Regardless of size, the yacht is what an owner would describe as a leisure marine vessel.

Boat vs Motor Yacht - What's the Difference?

Again, there is no standard definition of what a yacht is. So some people tend to think that you can call any old boat a yacht. But there are some characteristics that are more typically associated with yachts and that set them apart from other boat types.

Generally speaking, the word yacht is used to describe a floating vessel bigger than any other recreational or luxury boat . They typically have more extensive length overall. But it pays to know that there isn't a specific line that would argue specific boat sizes as yachts or not's. On average however, boat models tend to measure 30 feet and below while yachts typically start at about 35 feet.

Viable Conditions

Most boat designs are intended for calm inland waterways where they can navigate and operate without putting the crew at risk of danger . Bigger boats, usually up to 30 feet in size, should be able to operate in slightly rougher open waters for a short period of time.

But yachts with their supreme technology, comfort features, and varied power mechanisms can sail easily in deeper ocean waters with strong wind and waves. That's why yachts are the watercraft of choice for owners who want to enjoy long excursions across great distances.

It's standard for a yacht to have a cabin where passengers can sleep. They also have bathrooms since they're designed for long voyages. Depending on the size of the yacht, they can also come with a wide range of other pleasure features on board, including but not limited to dining halls, full sized kitchens, gyms, pools, tennis courts, and theaters to name a few. Superyachts and mega yachts can even have helipads so passengers can visit remote islands.

Essentially, the yacht is designed to provide passengers a hotel experience, but on water. The unique environment means that those who ride the massive ships can enjoy a combination of the great outdoors and lavish comfort on board. Commercial yachts of significant size can pack any variety of facilities, including various courts for different sporting events like tennis, basketball, and even golf.

Propulsion - Motor Yachts and Sails

The yacht could be propelled by either sails and wind or by an inboard or outboard motor, which is common with many other boat types. On any other boat, an engine should be able to produce sufficient power and speed on the waves, cutting through choppy water without a hitch.

However motor yacht engines tend to be superior in terms of power. These supersized engines produce supreme propulsion, generating as much as 800hp for some of the biggest motor yachts in the biz. They're also designed so that they don't wear out quite as quickly, so yachts can travel for longer periods of time. In fact, yachts that ditch the sails for motors because of their size are no longer considered boats, but ships .

Navigational Technology

Boat buyers have the option to add high tech navigational instruments to their boat, but it's sort of a requirement if you're buying a yacht. Since yachting can involve long, even trans oceanic voyages, it's important that they're equipped with the latest technology for navigating the waters.

These instruments work to provide precise positioning information which is especially important when traveling long stretches of open ocean or sea. Other than that, these high tech devices also make sure that the yacht has sufficient information on the water and weather conditions at sea, as well as any traffic or boat obstructions in their way so it could sail without a hitch.

Aesthetics and Comfort

Luxury isn't a quality that's originally exclusive to the yacht since there are tons of other boat designs out there that boast luxurious, sophisticated aesthetics and interiors. But the yacht definitely pushes the envelope, with even the most basic yacht touting premier facilities on deck.

These leisure boats use the finest materials for their seats, with some even touting genuine leather upholstery for the added comfort. With the style of a lavish mansion, yachts are floating hotels giving its passengers the ultimate luxury boating experience that combines both modern sophistication and comfort.

Yachts are expensive , no doubt. While you might be able to get your hands on a top-of-the-line boat with a couple hundred thousand dollars, yachts cost several hundred millions if you're looking into premier yacht territory.

In fact, some of the most expensive yachts cost way over a billion dollars, making them available only to the super rich. Nonetheless, those who want the yacht experience have the option to rent them out from their owners. It's still not going to be cheap though.

What are Superyachts, Megayachts, and Gigayachts?

megayacht

Now that we know what boat can be called a yacht, it's time to get into categories. The size of a yacht tells you which specific category it falls into. Again, there are no hard lines that separate categories. So it's sometimes a matter of opinion, but boat experts do agree on some of the size boundaries for different kinds of yachts.

The superyacht , also called a megayacht (depending on where you're from) is any yacht that measures 24 meters to 85 meters. Some yacht owner sources say that superyachts are yachts that measure 40 meters or more. It's not common to see yachts this size being propelled by sails since their weight could require unrealistically strong wind to push them forward.

A yacht exceeding 85 meters is what you would call a gigayacht , with most of them measuring between 300 feet to 400 feet in length. They have the most extensive length overall compared to any other kind of yacht. They can cost anywhere from $200 million to upwards of a billion bucks, making them some of the most expensive recreational luxury vessels around.

To be called a superyacht, megayacht, or gigayacht, the vessel must have sophisticated aesthetic and leisure qualities that surpass the comfort and appearance of other boats. They should also have staterooms or cabins for passengers to rest after a long day of fun and adventure. Propulsion is done by way of powerful motors in place of sails, officially designating them as ships, not boats.

Remember though that once a yacht reaches 22 meters (the measure of a 72-foot boat), it's required that you get a crew to operate (for more on this see our guide: what size yacht requires a crew and captain ) . That's because there's a lot that goes on when you're managing a large vessel. Without a captain and other professionals on deck, owners might struggle to safely operate the large vessel.

Yacht charters can have a crew that includes just around six people. But then again, yachts in the superyacht territory might have as many as 20 members on deck. A gigayacht can have as many as 92 crewmates on deck to cater to the needs of all the passengers and to make sure that the boat runs as smoothly as possible. This includes stewards and stewardesses that work directly with guests, and engineers who take the background roll of seeing that all the ship's machinery is in good working condition.

Types of Yachts

There are various types of yachts on the market that cater to different yachting preferences. Choosing the right one depends on what kind of activities you're hoping to enjoy while you're out on the waves. Here are some of the most common types of yachts:

Sport Fishing Yachts

Typically used in coastal waters, sportfishing sailing yachts usually come with livewells, rod holders, and spacious forward decks like other fishing boats that let you move around as you attempt to lure in your target. They can also be used for racing.

Luxury Yachts

For the record, the word 'luxury' can precede any type of yacht boat. For instance, there are sportfishing and luxury sportfishing yachts. The term simply aims to designate a yacht as designed with finishes and features that give it more class than other yacht models, so they can be more of a pleasure to use. Some boat owners soup up a fancy yacht and use it for racing.

The weekender is a small type of boat that's easy to maneuver, capable of accommodating a small crew, and perfect for weekend sailing excursions. They're fitted with sails or a small motor. These vessels are not powerful or anything like that, but it does make the ideal little boat for a quick overnight trip with a close friend or two.

Expedition or Explorer Yacht

These vessels are designed so that they can accommodate large numbers of passengers over long distances. The massive ship can enable people to travel to remote areas of the world and exotic islands that might not be reached by commercial flights. Owners are usually corporations in the cruise business, so you won't find one that's for private or personal use.

Boating in the Lap of Luxury

When does a boat become a yacht? A superyacht? Megayacht? Or a gigayacht? Well, it's all about the size. Yachting offers the most luxurious floating experience you might ever have on the open water, which is what makes them so enticing for people looking for a new way to enjoy the water. Complete with all the facilities of a five star hotel, these boats redefine what it means to rest and relax on the waves.
