How to hire the little red boats in York

When we see the return of the iconic little red boats York residents like me know that summer is just around the corner.

Seeing the little red boats in York chugging up and down the River Ouse is a sign that spring has finally arrived in the north! For me, it’s as exciting as spotting the first daffodil on the banks of Clifford’s Tower.

Hiring one of the red boats York has to offer is one of the best things to do on a sunny day in the city. The boats are affordable, easy to hire and simple to drive.

If you just want to make a booking and don’t have time to read this article, you can pre-book your little red boat here. Otherwise, read on to discover everything you need to know to hire your own red boat.

Essential guide to the red boats in York

What are the red boats york  .

York’s ‘little red boats’ are small, self-drive boats that you can hire for up to one hour to cruise the River Ouse that flows through the centre of York.

They are the cheapest self-drive boats York has to offer and, even better, you don’t need a boat licence or a drivers licence to hire one.

Each red boat York holds a maximum of eight people. However, the boats are small so if you are a group of eight adults, I think you’ll find it a squash. We’re a family of five which I think is the perfect number for a comfortable boat ride.

If you’re short on time, you can also do half-hour rentals.

When can I hire a red boat in York?

The boats start running on February 10th and run throughout the spring and summer in York until November 17th. Rentals start at 10 am each day.

There isn’t a set closing time for the boats as rental availability depends on the light and weather conditions on the day. The boats don’t operate at dusk or during the night.

Who can hire a red boat?

You can hire a boat if you are over 18. If you’re lucky enough to look younger than 18, you’ll will be asked to show photo ID.

You cannot hire a boat if you, or any of your group, are under the influence of alcohol.

What is the little red boat hire price?

Hire prices are per boat, not per person, so this is a cost effective way to explore the river in York, especially if you’re visiting York with kids or as part of a small group.

In off-peak periods a one hour rental will cost £35 per hour on weekdays and £40 per hour on weekends.

In the peak summer season and during school holidays, a one hour rental costs £40 on weekdays and £45 on weekends. York boat hire doesn’t get cheaper than this!

This self-drive boat York requires a returnable security bond of £40 is required for all rentals and must be paid by card or in cash before you depart in your boat. The fully refundable deposit protects the boat company against any damage to the boat or late returns.

Little red boat York rentals – how to book

I always advise booking one of the red boats York in advance, especially in summer months. There are only 14 boats in the fleet so they book up quickly.

You can book a time slot to suit you and your schedule so you won’t have to waste precious sightseeing time queueing for an available boat. Time slots are available at 15 minute intervals so a red boat can be fitted into even the busiest York itinerary.

To ensure you get secure a boat and to avoid long queues on the day, book in advance here.

Another benefit of booking online is that you get free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure should your trip plans change or you get a rainy day in York and don’t fancy being out on the river.

Boats depart from Tower Landing between Tower Gardens and The Lowther Pub (use postcode YO1 9RZ). It’s a two minute walk from Clifford’s Tower and a 15 minute walk from York Minster.

When you arrive at the landing for your booking, you’ll get to skip the line using a priority queue. If you arrive late, you may miss your time slot and your boat will be allocated to someone else.

If you’re unsure of your dates and timings, it is possible to do walk-up on the day rentals.

However, you must be prepared to queue, particularly in peak season. Plus, any boats that become available will be prioritised for pre-booked guests.

Is it difficult to drive the boat?

These York self-drive boats are easy to operate – I don’t have a driver’s licence and I’m able to drive one.

There is a pedal for go, a throttle for speed and a steering wheel. It’s similar to driving a dodgem on a fairground ride but slower and with more control (and without the bumping obviously)!

It’s important to note that the drivers seat and front window are low down. My 6 ft 5 husband was unable to see out of the window when he sat in the seat so he had to kneel on the floor instead! So if you’re tall, I suggest sitting back, enjoy the ride and let someone else take the wheel.

Where can you go in a red boat?

You must follow a designated loop route along the River Ouse and always drive on the right in the direction of travel.

The most scenic part of the river is on the right hand side from the departure point. I suggest driving this part first in case you run out of time.

Initially, you will pass the Kings Arms Pub (one of the oldest pubs in York) before passing under Skeldergate Bridge. You will then run alongside Museum Gardens where you’ll be able to see the towers of York Minster rising behind the park.

You will chug past residential houses and the back of historic St. Peters School which Guy Fawkes attended as a child. The route becomes increasingly leafy and you will feel as if you are in the countryside even though you remain in the suburbs of York.

You must turn your little red boat around at Clifton Bridge and return along the other side of the river. If you have time, you can continue past the departure landing and continue through the city centre under Ouse Bridge.

On this route you will travel past Rowntree’s Park before turning around at the pedestrian Millennium Bridge to return to the boat dock at Tower Gardens.

It’s an easy circular route so you won’t get lost but you’re provided with a map, just in case. Yorkies will happily shout at you from the riverbank to tell you to turn around if you venture too far by mistake.

Are the little red boats York worth the cost?

We love taking a red boat out on the river with our kids and try to do it at least once every summer. We bring a picnic and enjoy the sun and city views. It’s great fun and the cheapest boat hire York has to offer.

The boats are great value for money for families and group. I think it’s also a romantic thing to do in York for couples. However, it you’re a solo traveller, the red boats will work out more expensive than other York boat trips.

The boat won’t have a recorded commentary like the City Cruise boat trips so if you want to learn something about the city whilst on the river, self-drive boat hire York is not for you.

However, if you’ve ever wanted to be your own captain or just want to soak up the amazing City of York skyline, you’ll love the red boats York as much as I do.

Hiring a little red boat in York allows you to see the city centre from a different perspective and get a sense of how green our beautiful city is.

How To Book The Little Red Boats in York

How To Book The Little Red Boats in York

Although the large double-deck red and white sightseeing cruise is a really popular activity in York, we both decided that the self-drive little red boats would offer up a much more memorable and enjoyable experience on the water.

If you’ve already seen them chugging up and down the River Ouse, chances are you’ve come to a similar conclusion!

After our week in the historic northern English city, we can happily confirm that heading out for a drive on the water in one is definitely one of the best things to do in York in the summer or even on a sunny spring or autumn day.

In this short post, we've shared everything you need to know to book + drive a little red boat in York.

In a rush? Find a timeslot and book your boat here .

york-red-boats-5-adr.jpg

Self-Drive Red Boats in York | The Essentials

The hire boats operate from 1st April to 31st October, running from 10 am to 5 pm in the summer months (last departure at 4 pm, earlier if conditions are poor).

Holding groups of up to 8 people, they’re really really easy to drive.

It's simply a single pedal for 'go', a throttle handle to adjust the speed with your right hand, and a little steering wheel to navigate. Neither of us had driven a boat before and were pleasantly surprised at how simple it was to navigate (even Emily managed it).

You’ll pick it up in no time at all!

The self-drive experience follows a set loop route along the Ouse, bringing you under several bridges, through the centre of the city and out into verdant countryside scenes. Each rental period is fixed at 60 minutes, which is plenty of time to complete the route at an enjoyable pace; you have a map on board in case you get confused but you really won’t get lost.

The experience starts and ends at the jetty in Tower Gardens ( here on Google Maps). It's just a minute's walk from Dyls cafe and a few minutes from the York Castle Museum & Clifford's Tower - if coming from the centre of York, we recommend giving yourself about 15 minutes to walk it.

People hiring and driving the red boats must be at least 18 years old, and you may be asked for ID to prove this. This age requirement may sometimes be lifted to 25 so, if you’re in that age-range (or look it), it’s best to bring some proof regardless.

The boats are a family-friendly activity, but kids under 10 years old do have to wear a life-jacket and must act appropriately on the river. Also, note that although they hold groups of up to 8, we'd personally not want to go beyond a group of six if everyone's an adult.

Costs & How To Book A Red Boat in York

You pay per boat, rather than per person, and the total cost varies according to where you book and time of departure.

With CityCruise it's £40 for the pre-12 pm slots and 45 for the post-12 pm slots in summer, but prices can increase to £45 and £50 respectively on peak days.

Therefore, the best place to book online is here as it's a £40 flat rate regardless of timeslot. You also get free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund, and it's easy to change your timeslot too.

For early spring and late autumn trips, hire prices can reduce by about £10 but conditions may not be as enjoyable, so have a look at the forecast.

It’s best to book your red boat in advance online, especially if the forecast is good or you’re visiting the city in summer. For all online bookings, you simply have to select a specific start-time (listed in 15-minute increments from 10 am) and arrive at the jetty a few minutes beforehand to get your briefing.

Groups or individuals with online advance bookings also get to skip the queue as there’s a priority line.

It is possible to just walk-up and pay in person on the day, but this will cost you more, availability is not guaranteed, and you'll have to wait in line behind others who haven't booked. As there’s only a fleet of 14 red boats at present, demand will outstrip supply on a sunny day. Further, you pay more if walking up, with rates at time of writing being £45 / hour in comparison to what you can get online.

Therefore, for convenience and to save a bit of cash, we'd definitely recommend doing what we did and booking on GetYourGuide (the specific page to book a red boat in York is here ).

One area of confusion and potential inconvenience is the £40 cash deposit (also referred to as the 'security bond'). We were told to bring this and so made a point of going to an ATM on the way, but then it wasn't requested. Perhaps it was because we'd booked online but, regardless, we still recommend bringing this cash deposit with you just in case (especially if doing a walk-up).

The deposit may be deducted or kept if you return the boat 10 minutes late without a valid reason or it’s damaged / excessively dirty.

york-red-boats-8-adr.jpg

Is It Worth It?

Definitely.

The only sticking point is that the cost per person is an awful lot steeper when doing the red boat as a couple (£20 per person) vs. as a group of six friends (£6.60 per person)! We did it together and loved it, but do appreciate that it may take a hefty chunk out of your total York travel budget if it's just the two of you.

However, if you're willing to sacrifice a few pints or other things to do in York , you will not regret heading out for a drive along the River Ouse when the sun is shining.

We only wish we could have stayed out for longer as it was so fun to be on the river and able to actually drive a boat for the first time.

york-red-boats-3-adr.jpg

Safety, Rules, and Responsibilities on The River

It's imperative that anyone driving the red boats in York understands their responsibility and acts in accordance with the rules of the River Ouse; the waterway sees a lot of traffic (rowers, geese, large sightseeing boats, ice-cream barges, and personal pleasure crafts) and there has been a collision in the past.

There’s a short in-person safety and driving brief before you get on at the jetty, but a few key things to note ahead of time are:

You cannot drive the boat if under the influence of alcohol, and people under the influence of alcohol are not permitted on board.

Drive on the right hand side, giving space to other boats and river users.

When passing under bridges with three-arches, you should go under the central arch.

Always be aware of oncoming boat traffic and those attempting to overtake you.

Be aware of your surroundings and drive / act responsibly on the river.

Soft drinks and food can be taken on board, but no alcohol.

You have to stick to the route and cannot park or get off the boat anywhere on the river except the start / end point jetty.

Ranger Tugs stopped making the 21EC model in 2017. While the company states that there are no intentions on restarting the line anytime soon, there were enough of the boats made that there are always some for sale of different makes and conditions for those looking to buy one. Many larger Ranger owners have told me that they started with a 21 and have moved up as they saw the need or had the budget. As of 2019 similar tugs are priced in the $39,000- 47,000 range. There are subtle variations in engine, options and owner personalizations that account for the range in pricing. Condition was also a factor when I was looking for the boats. Some owners have lovingly kept their boats up while others have used an abused them. Based on my experience condition significantly affects the price. Buyers willing to put in some work in cleaning and restoring a boat will find better deals on the 21EC vs. buying a clean boat.
