The International One Metre (IOM) class is a 1m long hull with 1.7m mast height and a minimum weight of 4kg. The class rules are very tight and limit yachts to 2-function control and 3 one-design rigs. Hull, ballast, draught and construction materials are also limited. There is sufficient freedom to allow different hull and fin/rudder shapes to be developed.

A welcome from the IOM ICA Executive Committee

It is my honour as one of the youngest IOMICA Executive members to address you on behalf of our newly elected Executive Committee. Like you, my passion and commitment for this brilliant global class have only strengthened with my growing participation. It is fitting having this address come from one of our youngest members, as more than 50% of our electorate is new to the Executive Board. So, to initiate this address, I would simply like to start by pausing to thank each and every one of you. Thank you for your support and participation in a radio sailing class that has origins dating back to 1958. What an accomplishment! This lengthy tradition  has produced some amazing sailboat designs and memorable events year after year. The shared passion for IOM has generated a  global camaraderie  that unites us all. Recognizing this, we would like to acknowledge some remarkable individuals for their stalwart commitment and personal sacrifice in promoting our IOM Class and the infrastructure behind it.

We must congratulate Mr. Fred Rocha for his eight years of service as the IOM ICA Chairman and acknowledge everything he accomplished. His perpetual enthusiasm   and  inclusivity  are traits that have greatly benefitted our class. He aspired to improve both our internal and external communication, promote the development of our class in new territories, and openly embrace new concepts and ideas. Fred was very generous with his time and support of all our organizational requirements, and worked tirelessly in this pursuit. Congratulations also need to be extended to our newly elected IOM ICA Chairman, Mr. Olivier Cohen. Additional changes in the Executive resulted in the position VC – Technical is going from Mr. Jeff Byerley to Mr. Robert Grubiša, VC – InfoComms passes from Mr. Pedro Egea to Josip Marasović, and the position of Treasurer formally transferring from Mr. David Turton to Mr. Sean Wallis. Pedro Egea deserves special recognition, as he’s tirelessly served our group with IT and “common sense” support for now eleven years — you are a genuine rockstar!! VC Measurement position is vacant, but we wanted also to congratulate Mr. Lawrie Neish, a true veteran who was helping us for around 11 years!! Gentlemen, you all deserve our heartfelt thanks for your service, and be assured we will raise a glass on your behalf.

As COVID continues to be a present challenge for all of us, I’d like to conclude this greeting with a note of  enthusiasm .  Always remember why the IOM Class is held in such high esteem in so many different countries,  surviving the test of time!  No matter how technologically advanced and exceptional IOM sailboats become in future, we will always rely on an overwhelming and continued desire to explore all facets and possibilities to improve performance and everyone’s experience in the end.  We need to continue to push our limits in all sectors of this class, and convey that information in an  open  and  democratic  fashion. This voice needs to be expressed beyond just our annual vote, but vocalized at every race, regatta, start, and buoy rounding, and literally every metre moving forward. Whether you are sailing at a top international regatta or having a twilight club race with friends, you are all part of this active global  IOM family . We are all facing challenges and uncertainty in our daily lives, but we do not have to question our passion and commitment to IOM. Through your individual activities and support, each of you is responsible for helping make this class what it is now and will ultimately become. Our growth and transformation evolve only when you  participate ,  experiment , and continue to  explore , so your engagement is crucial to our success in the future. We look forward to seeing you at future regattas, active in our forums and chats, social media and in photos. The year 2021 is at the very end, but we are just getting started, so let us all continue our story  together .

– Josip Marasović, new VC InfoComms

International One Metre Class

The International One Metre (IOM) is the most popular RC racing yacht in the world and is raced in over 30 countries.

DSC 0931

The class was created in 1988 by Jan Dejmo aided by Graham Bantock and the Technical Committee of the IMYRU (predecessor of IRSA).  It has continued to grow steadily since its creation.

Although carbon fibre is allowed in the construction of the fin and rudder, construction of the hull must be of either wood or glass fibre. Spars shall be of alloy or timber and the sails are to ‘One Design’ sizes.

DSC 0904

The number of rigs is limited to three. This makes  the class very popular for amateur builders and many designers have plans for competitive boats. Builders who can supply kits for home completion or completed boats are plentiful.

The IOM class is managed by its own International Class Association, the IOMICA. Please visit the class website at  www.iomclass.org

About SOLING 1 METER

The Soling Class is the largest class affiliated with the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA). It is a one-design class. The One Meter was designed to be a low-cost, kit-based one-designed class primarily targeted at the beginning Radio-Controlled (R/C) sailor. It is often the local class that beginning sailors start with and yet it is challenging enough that most advanced racers still race their Soling. The hull, deck, keel, and rudder are made from vacuum formed polystyrene plastic. Only flat single-paneled sails are approved by the Soling Class. Only two channels are used to control the boat. One channel for both sails and the other channel for the rudder. Transmitter may have additional channels but they are not allow to be used in sanctioned races.

In rough order of importance, the performance of a RC yacht is a function of the following parameters.  It is interesting to note that, of all the major performance factors, only the beam of the hull has been left free by the IOM class rules.  It is therefore primarily differing beams, and positions of maximum beam, which currently distinguish the different IOM designs.

Sail area yes  3 rigs only
"A" approx 6000 sq cm
"B" approx 4100 sq cm
"C" approx 2700 sq cm

Ballast ratio yes  62.5% max (2500g bulb max)
Hull length yes  1000mm
Sail aspect ratio  yes "A" rig approx 4.8
Displacement  yes 4000g minimum
Rig plan  yes Bermuda sloop, 7/8 fractional rig

IOM success

Where might we go from here.

My first thought was to simplify the measurement of an IOM, and thus to simplify the class rules.  After a couple of years of trying to simplify the rules, I realised they were about as simple as they could possibly be and still achieve a "home-build one-design".  [Yes, indeed!  For those doubters out there, I invite you to have a go yourselves at simplifying the IOM rules and still end up with essentially the same boat.  Jan always reminds me that the apparently "simple" IOM class is achieved by "complex" rules.  There seems to be something of an inverse relationship between the "simplicity" of a class and "complexity" of the rules.]  The idea, of course, is to maximise the appeal of the class to the club skipper, to encourage its increased adoption in countries where it has not yet achieved a significant position, and to minimise regulatory and measurement problems and overhead.  I now think that the IOM class association should introduce an IOM design which is a strict one-design hard-chine hull (the Boxkite is on offer from Graham Bantock) with materials restricted to wood only in both hull and appendages.  This kind of IOM would use "normal" measured IOM rigs and sails, but ball-raced goosenecks or jib swivels would not be permitted.  Using an idea of Charlie Coventry, whenever this kind of design races with other IOMs, the other IOMs would have 2 points added to their score in every race of that event.  We might call this kind of IOM the BOM -- the Box One Metre and provide it with its own class rules.

Following this idea, and taking it one step further, is to introduce a "manufacturer" IOM.  This design would consist of a complete kit of materials and fittings, needing only radio control to go racing.  Its rules would be very simple -- you can use only what is in the kit, and you have to use it the way the kit instructions say.  This would be the MOM class, and it would have its own class rules.

My second thought a while ago was to improve the standard of sailing at IOM events.  We now have umpiring at International events, and this I think is an excellent development.  So my second thought now is to give experimenters and tinkerers a class to play in as well -- a "Marblehead" IOM, if you like.  So I think the IOM class association should introduce a kind of One Metre, where there are no restrictions on materials or fittings, while keeping the "normal" IOM length, weight, and overall draught limits for a mono-hull, and the "normal" IOM dimensions for the sails.  Everything else is "free".  Extending Charlie's idea, every such "unlimited" One Metre would have 1 point added to its score when racing.  We might call this kind of One Metre the FOM -- the Free One Metre, and again provide it with its own class rules.

While the BOM and MOM could measure as an IOM, the FOM obviously would not.  The FOM's attraction is that it conforms to the IOM "core" idea -- a minimum displacement in a one metre length with standard size sails -- while allowing itchy fingers and enquiring minds to enjoy freedom...  Neither the BOM, MOM, nor the FOM would be "International" classes, but who knows what time might bring us if boats were built and raced in these classes around the world?  It might be worth being clear that none of these ideas actually affect the IOM class and the IOM class rules -- these continue exactly as they are.  If you are interested in reviewing and commenting upon the proposed BOM, FOM, and MOM class rules, e-mail me and I can send you a document.

Model Boat Builders Plans: One Metre Class Yacht Plans

The International One Metre boats are light, responsive and fun to sail. The class rule is ‘closed’ and many aspects of design, materials and construction are restricted in an attempt to promote close competition. However the rule is designed to allow the DIY enthusiast some freedom to construct an inexpensive and competitive boat. The important speed related criteria of length, draught, displacement and sail plan are limited to a maximum of 1000mm, 420mm, 4kg and 3 prescribed rigs. Please Note: These plans are printed to order and take approximately 7 days for us to obtain.

1m RC sailboats have become increasingly popular among hobbyists and enthusiasts in recent years. With their miniature size and intricate designs, they offer both recreational and competitive sailing opportunities. These remote-controlled boats have become a favorite for people who love to build and race their own boats. The boats come in various sizes and designs, but the 1m RC sailboat is one of the most popular sizes. It is small enough to be easy to transport and launch, yet large enough to showcase impressive sailing skills. The design of these boats allows sailors to enjoy the thrill of the wind in their sails and the joy of seeing their own creation out on the water. With technology that continues to advance, these remote-controlled sailboats have become even more sophisticated, allowing for enhanced control and maneuverability. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced sailor, building and sailing a 1m RC sailboat is a rewarding experience that offers hours of entertainment and enjoyment. In this article, we’ll explore all there is to know about 1m RC sailboats, from building and sailing to locations and regulations.

What is a 1m RC sailboat?

A 1m RC sailboat is a remote-controlled miniature boat that can be sailed in ponds, lakes, and other calm bodies of water . These boats are designed to be self-righting and can sail in light wind conditions . They usually consist of a plastic hull and a rigging system that includes a mast , sails , and ropes . Here are some additional details about 1m RC sailboats:

  • The standard size for a 1m RC sailboat is around 39 inches in length and 75 inches in height .
  • The hull is usually made of lightweight plastic , such as ABS plastic or fiberglass , to make it easy to transport and maneuver.
  • The self-righting feature allows the boat to recover from capsizing due to wind or waves.
  • The weight of the boat is usually around 6-7 lbs to ensure it is lightweight and easy to transport.
  • There are different types of rigging styles , such as Bermuda , Gaff , and Lateen rigging , each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
  • Fully-functional 1m RC sailboat kits are available for purchase online, with detailed instructions to help you build your own sailboat at home.

How do remote control sailboats work?

Remote control sailboats work by using a radio transmitter and receiver. The radio transmitter allows the user to control the boat’s movements from a distance. On the boat, the radio receiver is connected to two battery-powered electric motors or servos which change the position of the boat’s sails or rudder. To control the boat’s speed or direction, the user sends signals to the transmitter which are then interpreted by the receiver and translated into instructions to change the position of the servos.

Alice Guo confirms leaving PH by boats, one of which was a yacht

Dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo on Monday said that they left the Philippines via boats, one of which was a yacht.

"Umalis po kami, Madam Chair, by boat po," Guo told a Senate panel.

(We left, Mada'm Chair, by boat.)

"Meron po kaming sinakyang yate po," she added, confirming the information asked by Senator Risa Hontiveros who is the chairperson of the panel.

(There was a yacht we boarded.)

After being pressed by the senators to tell more details about their escape, Guo said they climbed aboard the yacht in a port in Metro Manila.

However, Guo refused to divulge to the public the name of the person who facilitated their yacht ride and the owner of the same.

What she only recalled was that the yacht has "wings" stickers and numbers on it.

The senators tried to get the names of the facilitator and the owner by asking Guo to write it on a piece of paper, but she requested them not to divulge it in public.

Guo wrote the name of the facilitator of the trip on a paper, but she noted that she is not sure if he is the owner of the yacht.

Guo has repeatedly told the senators that she is afraid for her safety due to threats which she refused to divulge to the Senate panel.

After riding the yacht for a "few hours", they transferred to a bigger boat. She said she doesn't know the exact location where they made the transfer.

"Madilim pa rin po...Basta dagat po," she said.

(It was still dark. It was in the sea.)

After transferring to a bigger boat, Guo said they stayed in one room for days. She added that she was not aware of the time because they were told not to use their cellphones.

"Siguro mga four or three or five [days]. Basta matagal po...Four days po siguro... Hindi po kami pinapalabas," she said.

(Maybe four or three or five [days]. It was long... Four days maybe... We were not allowed to go out.)

She admitted that she felt afraid in the middle of the second boat ride.

"Kung puwede lang umatras, aatras na po ako...Nakakatakot po talaga," she said.

(If it were just possible to back out, I would have backed out... It was really scary.)

"Gusto ko na po umuwi. Gusto ko na po bumalik," she added.

(I wanted to go home. I wanted to go back.)

Asked why she did not return, Guo said, "Nagkamali po talaga ako (I really made a mistake)."

After riding the second "big" boat, Guo said they transferred to another small boat then proceeded to Malaysia.

"Paglabas po namin, may sinakyan pa kami isang maliit na bangka... 'Yung bangka po bumiyahe pa po kami tapos Malaysia na po," she said.

(When we got out, we boarded a small boat... That boat traveled to Malaysia.)

Asked about the location where they arrived in Malaysia, Guo said she doesn't know because they were instructed not to look around the places they have been.

In a separate Senate investigation last August 27, Guo's supposed sister, Shiela Guo, told the senators that they left the Philippines by riding several boats .

According to Shiela, the three of them were fetched by a van from their farm in Tarlac and they traveled southbound from dinner time to midnight.

However, she said she does not know the location where they rode a small white boat. According to Shiela, the small boat can only cater to around 10 people.

They then transferred to a bigger boat which Shiela said can accommodate many people. The second ship appears to be a fishing ship because there were nets on it, according to Shiela.

After riding what seemed to be a fishing ship, Shiela said they transferred again to a smaller boat.

Asked if the last boat transferred them to Malaysia, Shiela answered in the affirmative.

It took a month before the Philippine government became aware that Guo and her siblings had left the country in July.

READ : TIMELINE: The escape of Alice Guo and her siblings

Alice Guo is the subject of multiple complaints, one of which was filed with a Tarlac court, which ordered her arrest for her alleged connections to the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) in Bamban that was raided for illegal activities.

Among the complaints she is facing are graft, money laundering, and human trafficking.
